Im a lonely artist.
I have no friends that make psychedelic trance, i ve never take music lessons or any other kind of education involved in music creation.
So im very curious about how other people make their tracks.
my technic is
first i decide if it would be a fast track or a slow one (never think in a specific BPM)and i imagine what kind of sounds and percs would like in the track
then i start making percussion loops.
then i choose a bass.
then i fit (or try to fit )the bass frequencies with the kick.
then i add delays reverbs and stuff like that to make it sound "better"
then when im satisfied i STOP and get some, insipiration from previous songs or other artists songs or drugs or whatever.
then i make the whole basslines and percussion lines. when do ing this i decide the main structure (high and low parts ) and how long the song will be.
then i add special FX, breaks and stuff like that for bass and percs.
then when satisfied i take more drugs and imagine what kind of synth i will use.
then back to work i make a whole big sound wave and then put the synths.
i always try to put as much synths as my pc allows.
then i comvert the whole synths in a sound wave
then i put the voice samples, ambient sounds.
ambiental synths
then the special FX for synths and then the special fx for the whole track
then edit.
then redit.
then more drugs.
then more edition.
and the rest is more and more redition.
and at the end MORE DRUGS
then i decide if i made a worth track.
and then i enjoy it (whith drugs)
and thats how i make my tracks, drugs arent necesary but somehow their always present when i make music
PEACE! |

Hmmmm i see drugs are an important part of your production process!
I usually don't plan anything, sometimes i'll be listening to a track & i'll get inspired..So i'll open up the sequencer and bang out a decent part of a tune in a couple of hours..Usually though i start with kick & bass, then percussion & a few synths..Then i lay out a rough structure of the track with these parts..Slowly start adding more stuff to it, usually fx's always go last for me..
Oh yeah smoking spliffs usually helps me a lot too!

Here is a Good tip, but u need discipline and hard work for it..
Your computer has limited Cpu Right?
What i do is open Many Many .Cpr's (projects) For a single project...
like
Leads>lead1.cpr
lead2.cpr
etc...
than you can pump any vst with millions of vst with no damage, and also your track will be more organized and structure ;>
Cheers...

another way of working is having one midi project (with all the synths and patterns or buildups or whatever) that you export to audio and then an audio project where you build the track as a whole.

i have to do this too, because my pc is a very old machine. but honestly, working like this sucks. as for every slight change, you gotta go back to the file where u wrote it. and then reopening the main project file, which sometimes takes more than a minute in here.
i dont have a certain technique tho, and i do not always know what i am doing actually. sometimes i have a tune prearranged in my head, then it just takes a few days to finish the tune, but mostly i just sit down and start to fiddle around. then it takes mostly much longer...

another great way iv been doing is...
write all your clips in ableton LIVE...
make as many clips as you can of kick / bass / leads / percussion...
whats great about it is the midi learn feature... you can learn any knob or fader in a click of a mouse.
tweak, tweak & tweak some more...
smoke some spliffs get more ideas...
consolidate/bounce all this down to .Wav
Open in Nuendo 3 and start arrange...
Cheers!

I used to do the method when you do the bottom end first, then percussion and so on. I found this to be quite an odd way to work, although its good for filling in the whole spectrum creatively. What I will do these days is not give a damn about sound and get all the arrangement finished, but being as accurate with sound design as I can. I then start a second draft of the track where I refine sounds a little more and add extra components where I believe there is space. I carry on working like this until I feel I can make no further improvemnts, sometimes up to a 5th or maybe 6th draft.
It's quite a long process but if you really care about a track and have a good vision for it you have to try your best to acheive.
Then when your finished, smoke a spliff
A very rewarding moment as it's hearing it properly for the first time, rather than as that tune you've heard build up piece by piece. |

do you completely rewrite every draft or just run thru it and make improvemnets?
