imo, the most important aspects of any sequencer are workflow and intuitiveness.
putting together complex midi patterns, editing samples and constructing long processing chains is time-consuming and sterile enough. we spend so long removed from the music itself, tweaking and twirling, changing parameters and editing automation... the last thing i want my DAW to do is further impeded my workflow. tiresome menus and poorly-thought out workspaces kill my creativity.
it's sort of to do with the way i work - i'm far more inspirational rather than methodical creatively speaking. i want a DAW which enables me to get ideas down easily and simply and move on. i want to be as close as possible to the musical process itself.
as such i need a fast-flowing and intuitive creative space to work in. and the GUI does contribute in a big way to the overall 'feel' of the sequencer.
ableton has its limitations, no doubt. but in terms of instant tweakability, clear and concise layout, ease of use, intuitiveness and workflow it's unparalleled. it might not have all the routing options which cubase does or the infinite layers of detail that logic does, but it's such a free-flowing environment. everything is so well laid out, and there's a great at-a-glance design ethos at work which is perfect for improvisation.

Live is like playing an instrument instead of sitting down making rectangles on a grid forever.
I think it's quicker to try random ideas with it, not so much setup and shit to see what something will sound like.
I tend to be less perfectionist when just pissing around with it, so neat things happen more often.
I kinda thought it had shit sound at first compared to Cubase, but I think it was just me cause it's sounding better now that I'm getting more used to it. |

There s only one thing to be said:
when someone decide to seat down his "... " at his office and design a sequencer with the following sequencers main best specs, he ll rule the scenarium:
Reason - redrum, nnxt, midi learn, easy midi editing
Cubase - audio record, GUI, tools bundles, audio warpping, editing, channel workflow, midi editor etc
Ableton - simplicity and functionality for live applications, channels comunication (sending audio from a channel to another)....
Although we know each one is more related to specific needs, I wish one of them could begin updating what s really missing in it like:
Reason - record audio please, elt me use my vsts without rewiring...
Cubase - freeze channel more nicelly and faster like ableton live, let us send audio from one channel to another instead of bouncing and imporing it back (isn t it so obvious???)
Ableton - enhance the mixer/midi editor and make it more pleasant to create as it is to play live.
I m in a hurry but could describe a thousand modifications that would make each of them a little more complete...meanwhile I use them all....

| The midi timing sucks, the audio quality is really really bad and it tends to crash regularely. |

which version did you use version 1? and what computer a dx4 ?
i rarely crash with live but thats because i use version 6 with a core 2 duo at 2.4.
midi is great, maybe it does nothave all the midi option cubase has very true but the way you interact is really cool. you can work on a clip or and the arrangment you can do amazing stuff...
as for sound quality many people have mentioned the bad quality ... but i sincerly don't understand where that come from we either have very diffenrent perception of the sound or use a different software?!!!! |
