yes i know what you mean i think, i try to explain it with "listen inside of you". sometimes i listen to the loop or arrangement-part of the track, sit there relaxed and sometimes i can "hear" what needs to be there.
keeping the idea and try to transfer it into the production is not easy, but possible and if realised it becomes a very satisfying thing. such a way of producing needs 2 fundaments in my eyes:
- sensible focus to catch the "muse", listen to her.
- you must know your studio and know the technic to realise an idea of a sound into a real sound.

if the muse isnt there, you will get a hard time... but sometimes you must dig trough tons of frustrating crap to find the pearl which leads your production into a new spectrum of ideas and a new way the track can go. this is why "never give up" is very important too.

thats what i ment:)sometimes you can almost hear the melodies/ideas in your head when you just listening with open mind..

but you know..when you do have a hard time you can always take a brake from creating, make new sounds and return to the trak..synthezis is importent too you know:))
good luck to you

there is a very good paper on the cosmosis website...
Dealing with techniques ad creativity...
Producing music alone on a computer is quite tricky because ot is lique doing several jobs at the same time : song writer, sound engineer and ultimetely mastering engineer...
Sometimes while writing a song, i find myself listening again and again the same loop tweaking a stupid parameter for hours ... This is not good and a big handicap to creativity because any loop whatsoever even if it's great will blow your brains to yoghurt if you listen to it too many times.
Instead, one should write down and record as many ideas as fast as you can and then try to work on a structure and only when this is done ... work on the sound....
although it's really tempting to tweak all those nice looking vst's for neverending nights
Well, see the cosmosis site for more usefull tips on music creation.

Make a plan before you start working on a track. At least have a general idea of the theme of it - aggressive? percussive? melodic? happy? or something else? Ideally also draw a rough timeline sketch of it on paper. These will help you focus and finish what you begin.

nice thread.

tips from noob

-read a lot, then read again, and again, until you really understand. Understand things is way different from reading things.

-nothin is impossible. even those that today are the biggest producers one day didnt knew anything at all, everyone has a starting point.

-dont do things as an obligation           ``We shall not cease from exploration - And the end of all our exploring - Will be to arrive where we started - And know the place for the first time.``

I agree...

I've been playing/writting music since i'm 12 years old and for the past 18 months i've started to learn and produce - first music almost ready!!!!

But the one thing i really have to force myself to is the endless hearing/tweaking of a sample, loop or parameter!!!! It really fucks up my creative drive. I know it's the rules but that's the only thing i dont like about producing music in a computer...hope it grows on me

Still i agree one most focus on the current project with some fixed ideas where to go. If i start to "vomit" hundreds of "sketches" i usually get lost...and loose the direction!!!

- a drum never comes alone

what does that mean?

this means that a natural drummer always play different velocity-sets or multiple drums. same with hihats. drums and hh sound much better played in context with additional percussion/drum elements. just adding a single open hihat in offbeat for example or just adding a snare on every second beat without any additional elements will sound dry and static. just a few artists are realy able to arrange drumloops with a single drumsound in a sweet way, lish and atmos for example are masters of minimal sound in my eyes.

hehe just returned from lish studio and its so true that they are groove masters . no dought. oh and they have upcoming album cooking           www.sattelbattle.com

My concepts:

-If the finished track is as good as you pictured it to be, you failed. It should be as good as you pictured it and much much more!

-When you finished with a track, always leave it for a while and listen to it again a couple of weeks later. If you satisfied with the finish product now, you can release it, but most often you find yourself tweaking things that you haven't noticed before.

-like mentioned before in this thread: i always picture myself DJing infront of the crowd and how it reacting to the song

-read the manuals of all the plug-ins and applications you are using. Creativity comes when you can master the basic functions of an application.

-musical ideas comes to me all the time, so i write them down. When i want to produce a track i might choose 5,6 of those ideas and emphasize them in the track.
