Producing 1/64 notes in ableton?

I was using cubase until now, but everyone is talking about the new ableton live so I decided to give it a try. The one thing im getting a lot of trouble is with midi writing and editing. I loved how cubase handled the midi part, especially cause I like to write my melodies note by note. Now in live I can't even write a 1/64 note =( Is the maximum quantize 1/32?

Also, I find its odd that even if I change the quantize in the menu up top, it doesn't seem to change how the notes are made, not even the grid changes.

And the last thing: if I want to automate a certain knob in my vst, I know that I have to press configure and change the knob I want, but for some VSTs (like sylent1 for example) it just doesn't work. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks in advance!

ok, i will try.

first: i got the same issue, i think it´s not possible to write exactly 1/64 notes. imo, never found out how to manage that. anyway u can switch the note length off and draw them as long u like. they´re just as exactly as u draw them.

for quantisation, i had the problem too and for me it was just that there was no option chosen how ableton should quantize. so i just had to click on the "begining" button and/or the "end" button to get started. worked fine. choose only "begining" to quantize only the start of the note. otherwise ableton will rectify the end too, which means your whole work vanishes in the nirvana, cause u will earn 1/32 notes at the end. and yes, the max. quantize is 1/32.... anyway i didn´t ever need more.

last thingy: i had the same issue and found that some synths just work fine without launching the channel/scene/track. for all others just ensure your track/channel/scene is launched (record button below it should be red, not the global record!!) and everything should work fine =D

i.e. i had vanguard just working excellent without the need to switch on the record button to control it. on the other side i just get things like zebra or surge not working that way.

hope that kinda helped

U actually can draw 1/64 or shorter notes in Ableton. Right mouse click anywhere in the editor and choose 'Narrow' from the context menu. Then hold left mouse button and drag up and down on the timeline to get shorter 'divisions' in the editor.

U may check the version of your Sylenth1. With v2.2 and Live 8.0.4 there is no problem here.           Making what you want with what you have

Thanks for the help guys!

As for now, I've been playing with reaper for the last 4 hours and I must say: I'm very impressed.

I just started using ableton as a rewire slave for reaper, letting ableton deal with everything percussive in the song while reaper does everything else... amazing how a 4mb DAW can be so powerfull...

But I guess live's audio rendering engine is really better cause I import exact same midi clips + vst and it sounds a bit differente (worse) on reaper...

Still, very impressive nonetheless

Thanks again for all your help

You're changing the global quantisation, which is for something different. i do it the way master bud describes - by right clicking and selecting "narrow" then zooming in. The grey text in the bottom right corner tells you the midi note grid quantisation.

I had no trouble automating knobs in sylenth the normal way (ie. hit record then move the knobs). Sometimes Live does have trouble automating all the knobs in synths like albino because live can only automate the first 128 parameters of the VST. This easy to get around thought, just use the midi learn function, tweak using a midi controller and modify envelopes in the clip editor.

do you use 1/64 notes on bassline?           ``We shall not cease from exploration - And the end of all our exploring - Will be to arrive where we started - And know the place for the first time.``

depends on the synth and the bpm imo. but the bpm should be tooo high to get need of 1/64 notes

anyway, try and u will see

for me i have to say i have no problems working with 1/16 notes at a speed of 161-175 but also below that i usually dont need the notes to be more tight.
i use to work with ableton, so i just draw my notes in 1/16 length and after i switch the notequantization off so that i can drag the end back to my taste. works fine imo.

I don't use 1/64 notes on basslines but I use a lot on my melodies... helps give a better groove sometimes or that screaching sound on some synths
