Ok, far far from the usual killa bassline and VST vs Hardware topics i want to ask you for your personal role models. But not the psy producers but more mainstream producers/engineers that work with rock/pop/jazz bands or whatever.

My personal hats off goes to 2 guys that changed (for me atleast) the whole concept of rock music in late 90's. One of them is Nigel Godrich that worked with the likes of Radiohead, Travis, REM and more and David Fridmann that is known for his work with Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips. Both 2 helped a lot to the bands they worked with to break the usual rock formula and to create very unique sound that will remain to amaze people for years. Or so i believe.
Who are your favorites these days?           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

One of my all time favorite artists is Oliver Lieb. (LSG, Spicelab, Paragliders, Ivan, SOL etc ....) http://www.discogs.com/artist/Oliver+Lieb <- check his discography there. His music is so versatile, stretching from ambient to brutal techno and everything in between. Probably mest known for his trance works though. He was the first artist that really caught my ear, I was 12 at that time when I first heard "LSG - Blueprint" .. almost 11 years ago.
I know you asked for rock/pop/jazz etc, but I grew up with electronic music so this is what has formed me and my taste in music.           ________________________

Trevor Horn did it for me back in the 80s with the Buggles, Art of Noise, Propaganda, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and the Yes album 90125. The depth, clarity and inventiveness of his productions are something that I have been working towards ever since. Also an big influence on me is Jeff Lynne, who was largely responsible for making ELO as famous as they were. His trademark densely harmonic arrangements and relatively early yet completely matter-of-fact use of electronic elements opened my eyes very early on.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Of the big producers I concurr with Colin on Trevor Horn obviously being one of the absolute tops.

Another favorite of mine when it comes to the big-cheeze is William Orbit that did for example Madonnas "ray of light" album and some All Saints hits.
Especially his own earlier works like "set the controls for the heart of the bass" is very good and interesting production.
Very smooth and full sounding without being polished to death.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

William Orbit, indeed is one the great producers out there. and I think Brian Eno is a massive name as well.
Apart from that Butch Wig and Flood who worked with the Smashing Pumpkins among others, and Alan Moulder who worked with the likes of the Smashing Pumpkins and Depeche Mode.           Out Here We're Stoned....

Totally.

Not to mention Grace Jones and especially the Seal albums.

Trevor Horn is the man.

Ah! so someone else has an deep appreciation for Jeff Lynne too?

I thought that it was just me

Those ELO records are fantastic. The arrangement on Mr Blue Sky - on a pop record?

Fabulous...

Cheers,
Billy

Quincy Jones....

That man has produced soo many talented artists and many of his albums were indeed multiple artist compilations... For me the Q has always been the man...

Alan Parsons....

This guy was the first electronic music artist that I actually made a point to get into and collect his works. His compilations were very concept oriented and some of his sound design is still talked about to this day!           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Another 2 names from the history books:
Alan Parsons for his work with Pink Floyd
Dust Brothers for their work with Beck, Beastie Boys, Korn and more
Rick Rubin for fusing Rock and Rap in mid 80's with bands like Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chillie Peppers and releasing otherwise breakthrough material on his Def Jam Recordings.
And Neptunes for being for a brief moment a breath of fresh air in the US mainstream business.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

William Orbit - yeah... Fucking hell... how could I forget!

My younger brother had a vinyl album called "Wish Thing" by Torch Song, produced by William Orbit. It was released in 1984 and I must have heard it in about 1985. 'Prepare to Energise' was one of the tracks on it - definitely many years ahead of its time - and along with 'Don't Look Now' it was a huge inspiration for the 4-track recordings I was making at the time.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

'Slave to the Rhythm' - that opening chord sequence is just tooooo slinky. A sublime collection of 7ths, 9ths and suspensions that begs to go round... and round... and round...

Nope... you, me and Ott too! Apart from Mr. Blue Sky it was the 'Time' and 'Secret Messages' albums that I heard most of; to my shame I'm shockingly unfamiliar with 'Discovery' and 'Out Of The Blue'.

When I was 14 I programmed my BBC Model B computer to play 'Don't Bring Me Down' in full glorious 4-part harmony with noise percussion...

Well producers who did it for me...um i have to say Rollo, the man behind Faithless, when i first heard God is a Dj (not ever hearing Insomnia before that..hehe) i was hooked...after that bought every Faithless albumn there was to buy....i think the production is really indepth and intuitive..lots of small details...

as for other producers i am not sure, i read all these names and stuff, and i recognise some of them , but i dont know, i suppose before i got into making music i didnt rerally care about the producer...one just tends to think about the artist...i also suppose once one gets into electronic music opne tends to, or rather i think i have tended to disregard all other producers of other genres...dont get me wrong i do enjoy all types of music and will listen to any good music regardless of type, but i think in my own mind i only really consider producers of the good psy etc as being "tight"....which is kind of sad....

anyways ..i'll choose Rollo for this one.

(nice topic)

I don´t know many producers works, but I have some works that shows me how good they are...

-George Martin... for his priceless work with The Beatles.... here a point to Alan Parsons who worked with Martin and The Beatles with some tracks and albuns...

-Gary Goetzman and David Byrne... they made the FIRST all-digital film sound in history ... also a plus to Mr. Byrne who produced a B-52´s album also...

-BT... the high tech guy, the one who really understand the machines...           LOADING...
