Prodigal Sun – Do not Panic

Ever since I heard their amazing 12”on RedShift records a few years back, I’ve been awaiting great things from Prodigal Sun. Their debut album, Twisted Harmonics was solid, but I knew they could do better.

With the release of Do Not Panic, they’re finally closing in on their potential. This album is hard and psychedelic – every track is made for the dancefloor, be it the real one or the one in your mind. The production quality is excellent. I’ve been listening to the CD for a few days, and it’s really grown on me.

1. Morph
2. Do Not Panic
3. White Ones (Remix)
4. Life Mission
5. Sunspot
6. Space Crawler
7. Stardate 4-5-6
8. Vision Guitar
9. Lost Soul

1. Morph – Starts off as a smooth, morning dance track, similar to recent Logic Bomb or Antidote, then pretends to be darker, with steel-cable bassline, tweaky noises and melodies, until finally it gives up into a morning track that it is. 7/10

2. Do Not Panic – Title track kicks in with a deep pounding bass, and little squeaky windshield wipers working somewhere up on top. Lots of small textured noises and scratches keep the track going, with uplifting melodies breaking through here and there. Nice pounding track. 7/10

3. White Ones (Remix) – This track also has very nice sexy kickdrum. It gets going around 2:00 into the track with a helicopter techno groove, not unlike Charm or MOS, only not quite as dark. Sweet dance track – feels pliable like play dough, this one, with occasional extra-dimensional vibrations of old Goa piercing through the sexy beat. 7.5/10

4. Life Mission – Here the album gets harder. Machine gun beat, some metal pipes clanging harmonically, the ever-present scratchy textures, and a beautiful metallic flute synth breaking through. You can hear techy influences in this track, too, with the old acid trance feel of ‘Twisted Harmonics’ returning, though not for long. Thick growly synth lines take over at 4:20, importing the feeling of a wonderful body high. Spiraling just under the surface, they lead us in the dance. 7/10

5. Sunspot – This is a high energy track that draws you in and doesn’t let you go. It builds slowly, from clear waterfalls into a full river of sound, rushing at you at the speed of Goa. Some nice classic synths here at 2:40, getting louder, taking over about 4 minutes in. They transform, then come back, finishing off with some morning melodies. Nice outdoor track. 7.5/10

6. Space Crawler – This track is darker and a bit faster. Around 3:10 things begin to blow up. It never lets you down from here. Nice explosive track – will get everybody grooving on the dancefloor. It builds until 6:30, where it sneaks in a bit of insanity, then lets it go towards the end. 8/10

7. Stardate 4-5-6 – Starts off nice and hard, with a digital flute fluttering somewhere about the ears like a mechanical butterfly. Suddenly a swarm of glowing insects shows up, and begin to dance to the kick-drum. The fairy comes back, and leads everyone in a magical aerobic exercise. Beautiful track. 9/10

8. Vision Guitar – One of the best Guitar tracks out there, period. Dark, chugging, with some nice riffs. The guitar never gets cheesy, either. This one will destroy the dancefloor. 8.5/10

9. Lost Soul – Nice dark tribal track. 6/10

Overall – a very solid album, a great addition to any collection, and a must for any DJ. 8/10

I've had an unmastered copy of the album for a while, but finally got a proper copy and have to say was quite impressed! Compared to the first album things have definately moved on, there is alot more bottom end with this than the first album and the production is alot crisper. Its a very full on afair - take a look at the bpm's for the tracks and the lowest is 140 (one track at this speed!) - Lost Soul which has got a nice groovy progressive edge to it. The rest are balls to the walls tracks, and there are some killa's on there. Life mission is fukin great, punchy as fuk i've had it on repeat for a while now gonna be playing this out. Little white ones was one of my favourite tracks from the first album and its been given a nice re-working for the second installment. The title track 'DO not Panic' is wicked with some real acidic sounds ripping out of the speakers. The only one i'm not really into is number 5 Sunspot - i dont like that bassline - but thats just a personnel thing, i'm sure its pushing other peoples buttons, well i've seen em being pushed.
All in all this is tops - and you can see the progress the boys have made from the first album, all looks good for the future!
