hey, i'm picking up a mac pretty soon w/ logic, and in general working on building up some studios shite.
my question is in what order?
besides not having the money to blow, i feel like taking the time as i add stuff to learn it properly.
i feel like a laptop w/ logic will keep me busy for a while. i'm on the road a lot for work, so i'm not in a hurry to get monitors/sound card. but i think that would be next.
any thoughts?

Mac w/Logic definitely first... I got a soundcard at the same time as my laptop and that worked really well for me. The monitors was the last thing I got and I still am not convinced that I really need them, but a good set of headphones is a definite must. Many people will disagree with my suggestions of using headphones for production, but I really like the experiences I have had using headphones to write tracks vs using monitors alone...

Make sure you get a 7200 rpm firewire hard drive to go with it. You don't want to be recording to and pulling freeze files from your laptop's hd. It is too slow. Try a Glyph. That are pretty reliable.
About producing on headphones, just make sure you keep them pretty quiet if you are going to do that. I guess that goes for monitors too, but somehow it just seems that headphones are a lot better at causing tinitus.
Mubali, what kind of headphones do you suggest? I'm thinking about getting some new ones anyway. |

yes i would disagree with you....i have a very damaged ear due to producing psy with headphones....
i have to wear earplugs when i go to big parties...or my ear starts to hurt within 5 min of listening on big ass system....
thats the first reason i dont like headphones...and dont tell me you produce with your headphones playing soft....its always nicer to heard kick and bass at louder level....
next reason is , headphones have the psycho acoustic effect of speeding your music up....
also i dont believe you can monitor bass effectively on headphones....compare headphone ear cup to averge monitor cone and tell me which one is gona give you better bass/?>>??
so if i was you i would strongly advise to getting decent monitors as your next buy after the laptop etc.....for sure
successful production depends largely on hearing what you are making accuraterly....
thats just my personal view tho...

Actually, I do monitor my stuff soft as well as loud. My logic is if you can hear everything clearly at a soft level, then it will be great at a loud level.
For me, the headphones give me a better representation than most studio monitors. The only ones that I have run across with a better response than my Sony 700's are the mackie 624 and 824. I currently own a pair of Alesis M-1's and I am not too happy with their sound. If I try to write on the Alesis ones then my leads tend to be overpowering...
I have never run across an issue with my hearing and I have been raised around loud music all my life...
I do agree that you have to be really careful about your hearing and what I do might not be good for everyone, but at the same time the gentleman was stating that he was going to be on the road a lot. You try lugging studio monitors around in a backpack all the time and having to recompensate for the space you are dealing with and acoustics...

yes, mubali - this gentleman isn't debating whether or not to get monitors
but i travel a lot, and can't take them along
my headphones are sennheiser hd-25's, which are theoretically studio monitor headphones. i think it will be good enough to play around and learn the software, as well as perhaps do individual sound design.
my question tho, has to do with everything else - supposing iv'e got 'puter, sequencer, soundcard/monitor... then what?
perhaps a better question: "what was the order you put your studio together?"
i always like to read artists interviews "well, i started out banging on pots and pans, then i got a Roland/Korg/Nord/etc. XCV20395 whatever, etc"
what's YOUR studio story?

I got a midi controller (oxygen 8) and that's pretty much what sums up my studio to date... I am borrowing a friend's MC-505 but can't get it to work well with Logic. I kinda gave up on the hardware thing for a while anyway....
Since you have the Senheisers, you should be set for headphones. I would recommend learning how to use soft synths before consider buying a hardware synth. I have been able to play on a few friend's hardware synths and was surprised how once you work with soft synths how easy it is to apply that knowledge.
