Hello people, I hope you can help me, I'm a little bit confused.

Well, I bought a new Laptop specially in order to produce music, it's called "Lenovo N200",
it has a Intel Core2 duo T8300, 2.4Ghz, 3MB Cache and 4096Mb ram.

If was really hoping to not having any more problems with the CPU usage, like I used to have on my old PC which was a Centrino 1.7Ghz, 1024Mb ram. So I started a project on the old one and at the point where it started to "lag" (80%-100% CPU usage), i exported it and opened it up on the new pc.

I was really shocked when I saw, that it runs barely better on the new PC, I tried all kinds of asio drivers, (my soundcard is a Presonus firebox) but none works how I expected it, I have maybe 10% less CPU usage, which is immediately compensed when I load one more synth or so.

At the moment I have loaded: Cubase SX3, Fruity Loops8, 1 waves Rbass, 1 waves Req6, 2 Quadrafuzz, 2 Tonic filter, 1 Discovery2, 1 Albino3. And I have a Cpu usage of around 60-70% and it "lags" already.

Could this be normal? I'd really appreciate your help!

Thanks in advance

Greetings

Felix

hmm, maybe this helps you.

intel core 2 duo ~2Ghz, cheap soundcard- running about 20 vst´s same time + cubase SX = 30% CPU usage.

well to be honnest with the amount of plugins u say u use its not normal to have so much cpu usage even in the old pc!

my laptop with a centrino 2ghz and 1gram with a cheap esi neon usb soundcard can cope 3 time us much plugins!

i think u need to check if some apps are running in the backround (antivirus and a shit load of other apps that come along with laptops like wifi bluetooth etc)
tune ur system for audio and get rid of all the funcy crap vista has!           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

hey thanks man

yeah this helps me... well more or less shocks me!

maybe you're right, could be the antivirus shit running in the background. But if I look in the task manager, the usage comes only from cubase. Is it still possible that the anti virus shit is slowing down the machine?

Could you? (or somebody) please tell me, how I can quicken a bit my system (some tweaks)? B.t.w. I'm using Win XP pro, I deliberately chose a pc where they deliver also the specific drivers for a downgrade from vista.

you should check also the plugins u use, maybe one of them are buggy, or feedback is too high,,,in cubase try to turn all of them off and one by one on again and check your cpu usage;)
hope it helps

what kind of sampling rates and latency are you running the sound card at?

also, in task manager, what process is using the CPU cycles?           .

hello

in the task manager it's just the cubase that takes the percentage.

I just came back from the computer shop, the guy told me it might help installing the service pack 3, so i'm gonna do this now. Does anyone have any experience with that service pack?

It's has nothing to do with service pack 3 at all, to me it's sounds like your latency is to low!

Airi:

1. http://www.audioforums.com/resources/windows-xp-optimization.html
That should help you tune your system.

2. I tend to agree with wi']['ch and Spekafreka, it is probaby the latency setting in cubase.

Airi
do you use only licensed software ?
(some "cracks" contain viruses, troyans and other pests)

And, it is indeed recommended to disable all the hardware/software you don't need for audio work, as so many people say.

Also there is an option in the devices setup menu to use multicore processing, make sure it's enabled or it will only use one of your processor cores.           ~Airyck~
