Hello, can someone answer this question for me cuz I'm really in doubt.

Recently I had problems with my motherboard and I will have to change and get a new one (the exact sameone but new), So will I have to format my hard-drive and install win again? I think you might have to do that if it is a different motherboard but since it is the same I don't think it needs but I'm not 100%

I'm just afraid I might have lost all my recent work

Thanks           "Great things are only possible with outrageous requests." Thea Alexander

just check the new motherboard..

if the system isn't starting up - then u need to do a reistall.

But there's no reason the system won't start up because the machinery stayed the same.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

Just to be sure - you can take your HD to another computer and backup everything.

Hi there,

1st what windows u r using?

Anyway in most windows versions the hardware detection phase is starting prior to windows startup so it suppose to detect any hardware change and will ask you to obtain drivers for the new hardware.

you don't need to reinstall windows anyway

moreover if your problem is deeper search in microsft for tool called "DiskPrep" this tool deleting all non-comaptible hardware information you might have and will ask u to obtain the drivers again(just like after installing new windows)

if you need more help, let me know

if u have windows 98 or me there will be no problem at all...

if u have windows xp, there is a small chance it won't start and u'll need a format..

this case goes only if the new board u r buying has at least one thing different than the previous one... (this may happen if the new one has updated firmware from the company)

if it's exactly the same u won't experience any problems even at windows xp           in search for an answer...

i don't know what kind of system u use [which windoz]
but if u need to use another mobo, u better always cut your HD into at least 2 partitions: 1 for the windows [15Gb ... just in case] and another [or more] for files.

if this is how it is with u - simply save the files, and reinstall the system & programs only - just make a full list of all your installed plugins ... so u won't find out you missed a plugin during the work on a project.

another good advice - backup on CDs or DVD's and prepare a ghost.

cheers.

Thanks alot guys, from what I can see their is only a small chance of having to format the HD, and if I have to their are ways around it

I'm running Win xp, hopefully it will be alright I'll wait for my new motherboard to arrive, if their are any problems I'll ask for some help (not very good at pc hardware)           "Great things are only possible with outrageous requests." Thea Alexander
