Of course this is probably just my luck with computers, but I figured I'd ask here anyway. When I record audio from my mixer into Audacity or Sony Acid, the volume fluctuates for no apparent reason at random times throughout the mix. I am doing this the exact same way I did when I recorded mixes with XP on my old computer. I've tried every different setting I can try and the exact same thing happens each time. Has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

F!
Knowing my luck it's probably my computer. If I can find a lazy way to go back to XP I might do it. I was just hoping maybe someone here had a similar problem or knows someone who has and fixed it.

Doesn't really sound like Vista is the problem. What do you mean by the volume fluctuating? What and how are you recording? Could you post an example to look at?
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

I'll post an example when I get home. I just assumed vista/my computer since those are the only things that have changed since I last recorded a mix.
I'm using an rca output (have tried it from the rec out, booth monitor out and master out on my djm 600) into the mic jack.

Mic jack on a sound card or interface?

Straight to the mic jack. This is exactly how I did it before in the exact same programs so it has to be my computer/operating system.
I could try doing it through my sound card, but I really doubt that would fix anything. It's such a strange thing. The volume just randomly dips during parts of the mix. There's no rhyme or reason to it so it's not like it's being caused by a specific sound or frequency.
The other crappy thing about all this is that I'm making this mix in part to send to Paradigm to possibly play at Gemini this year. http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Mixer into the computer? If so yes, but it really doesn't matter what output I use (record out, booth out or master out).
As I said before, the only thing that has changed from the last time I recorded a mix is my computer/computer's operating system. So it's gotta be some combination of the OS I'm running with the programs I'm using (even though I used the same programs before).

Ascension, he's asking if you have a line in on the sound card, as opposed to a mic jack. Mic jacks are usually mono and supposed to be used with lower level signals (from tiny mics you use with webcams and stuff). If it's a new sound card, you might be able to go into the config and switch the function of the mic jack to a line in, if there isn't already one available. The problem might be that your sound card has compression algorithms on the mic jack, which can definitely cause this sort of thing. I still suggest using your interface and software that will take advantage of the ASIO.

Pretty much the only way I can figure to record is still through the mic jack. Like I said, I've recorded exactly like this before and it's only changed since I got a new computer and started running vista.
