Oh, don't be that shy, if someone hears your music it is for good! Let your parents listen to psytrance too!

it is possible, but i was involved in building a music studio for producer gill norton a couple of years ago and even tho he spent a fortune on having it built, some sound still traveled through to the upper level.
so i wouldnt bother, just do as the others said and cranck the volume right up, when your parents finaly have enough they will move out maybe.

Two different aspects on making music: acoustic isolation (or treatment) and sound proofing.

The first is to make the room sound as flat as possible (having the room affect the sound as minimal as possible, I believe)
The second is not let the sound bleed into other rooms.

You should aim and focus on the first aspect. You want your room to sound as best and flat as possible.

You could aim on improving the second aspect, but it wont improve your sound (I might even say if it's not properly done, than it can even harm your sound, as not letting sound leave the room can be achieved by absorption [the walls/isolation absolves the sound] or reflection [the walls reflect and trap the sounds, and the reflections is what you should try to avoid).

Working on improving your sound room can do wonders, and if you could acoustically treat and soundproof it would be great - why not build a floating room (a room inside a room)? Don't forget, I believe you aren't going to stay living with your parents forever, so also plan for the future (getting acoustic treatment you can reuse when you move out).           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

This note is a description of an alternative method of getting the 'sidechain pump' sound that is lower in CPU usage and cleaner-sounding than using most sidechained compressors. With this method it is also possible to get many sounds doing the same pumping action at once, to different degrees, without using any extra plugins. I'll be using Cubase terminology to describe it in the context of getting a pad pumping with the kick (and I'll be assuming you're fairly proficient with Cubase), but the technique translates to any DAW system and to any situation where this kind of gain control is needed. The only plugin you'll need is a gate that can be triggered either by a MIDI note or a sidechain input.

lol

my door is the gate, and i never knew, i could sidechain my walls. maybe use a compressor on the ceiling to prevent pumping.

LOL while all these responses are temporary solutions except for the killing your parents part what you are actually looking for is a material called rockwool. It has some of the best absorption and you can make your own broadband absorbers take a look here for more info http://www.gearslutz.com/board/bass-traps-acoustic-panels-foam-etc/61293-diy-broadband-absorber-pictures-posted.html           http://soundcloud.com/multiv3rse

Hi Droid / Shikoatha

You came to the right place for advice.

Over the years I have dealt with many peoples parents (including my own) the police, the council, the sound police, angry neighbours/landlords, landowners etc parentswise my advice is thus:

- Get some decent headphones - essential to the non disruption of people during night time production (and also a cheaper option than spending lots of £ on monitors if you just starting)
Still try to listen at times through speakers or your production may suffer.
Try studio spares or other company for headphones you can get a good deal on something good if you look.

- Go for monitors rather than big soundsytem or full range cabinets for producing in the house this is where I went wrong by setting up a 1k system in my bedroom.

- Try to talk to your parents and work out times when you are allowed to blast it IE when they are out or certain time they agree to put up with a bit of noise.

Explain to them that it is essential to your production and to learn things playing through speakers sometimes.

Try to get them on side there is nothing worse than producing what you feel is good then your parents belittle you because they don't understand the music you create it causes a conflict on what you are doing and sows the seeds of doubt over whether creating psytrance is an acceptable pastime.
It can only undermine your work if the support is not there.

- Try to explain to parents that its not just about drugs and boom boom boom but about learning about music, synthesis, composition, music theory etc

- Spend the money you saved on muffling the room up so no-one can hear on more equipment.

- I battled my parents for years (one side a folk musician another a teacher) it has only been recently that they accept what I do and understand the music (and even contribute money/help/kind words etc) my dad even listens to some tracks I do and says WOW!

- I was kicked out at 16 (15yrs ago) for abusing noise levels I wish someone had given me good advice when I was 16 - homelessness is no fun (and not good for setting a studio up or storing equipment)

I have seen the bad end of music pissing others off some friends I know had all their equipment seized by the council (4 guitars, 2x sets cdj's, 2x sets technics 12/10s, bass guitars, rig 2 x drum kits, alarm clocks, cd collections basically anything that could make a noise.

The council seized everything and shredded it using a Xmas tree shredder they then charged my friends £600 for destroying practically everything they owned.

Another time I lived in a house and we got noise detectors fitted by the council - laptop speakers could set the detectors off which resulted in the power going off for 5mns at a time - awful when in mid production and the power goes off you lose all your work and have to wait 5mns to re-boot.

Other times police came on a regular basis and always demanded to come in and have a look around - not good

One friend I have set up a studio at his parents (very well to do strict people) for years they couldn't deal with this and family nearly break up. Eventually they realise the music thing positive my friend get good at mastering and now travels the world occassionaly coming home for a few weeks to do prof. mastering for big labels (at his parents house still) his parents agreed he should keep studio there as knows the acoustics of the room for many years - a happy ending.

Also you don't always need to blast it all the time your ears will thank you in the long run (though its good to take some time each day to maybe play something through you created at a decent volume to see how it sounds)

But it can only annoy people if you are working on the same loop for 15hrs or annoying frequencies played constantly this work I try to do on headphones.

+1 on Makus's words don't be shy be proud, and one day your parents will be proud of their talented child they helped develop.

It may be hard to get your parents to understand what you are doing - encourage them to listen to the music they like when they like.

At the end of the day it is about compromise but you do want them on side that is important for your confidence, sanity and future well being.

I have lost friends whose lives went self destruct after being kicked out for playing loud music.

And if any parents reading this get your kids into the music - music is essential to human development and the clever kids play an instrument from a young age it increases general intelligence and understanding in many aspects of life.

"He's up there in his room I bet he's smoking acid and listening to that Wretched tractor music rotting his brain - wasn't like that in my day - Oh the youth of today! I just don't know what we are going to do!"           http://soundcloud.com/particle-matters
