Hi! A couple of months ago I bought myself a brand new ASUS A7J laptop and an M-Audio FW410 card. Ever since I've had problems with the fw410: After some uptime, could be everything from 10mins to 1hour, the fw410 control panel freezes when i try to move any random slider, and the hardware vol-control on the card stops to function. Can anyone please help me? Thank you so much! (PS: also i have problems with the sound hanging (for instance when running winamp, or even cubase, and at times the output sort of gets screwed up, like everything has a timestretch on it.)

Nothing but the fw410 is running on firewire, but what youre saying, is that i maybe have to give up the fw410 and get a new one, cause of issues with laptops? gawd i hope not! |

Hey Aviate, I have the same problems here with 410 sc!
About the "hardware vol-control": this function never really worked well for me. Maybe it´s some conflict with HP laptops, as far as I have 2 of them. But never really bothered me....
Now the "freeze": THIS REALLY BOTHERS!!! I can´t figure what´s going on. I can´t move the sliders from M Audio software when running audio.
I tried M Audio contact mails, but no answer from them...
And Colin, I will try to replace my cable. I hate this little firewire port!!! I dream about Mac cause of this...
Btw, I´m using now the older driver from the site. For me it´s working better.
My Laptop COnfig:
HP Pavilon Centrino Duo 1.66
1.0 Gb Ram
Windows XP Pro-SP2

SMS: Well, come to think of it, the vol-control seems to control the sliders in the cpanel, so maybe that's not an issue. But i've tried all of the available drivers, and i get the same problems with all of them.
As for the M-Audio support, they're no help, I had to contact a local distributor for support on the product.
Here's my specs also (which i forgot to post ):
ASUS A7J laptop
Intel Core Duo Processor 1,66 gHz
1.0 Gb DDR2 RAM
Windows XP Pro, and XP Home SP2(which i use for everything else than audio production).
And, I finally got an answer from the local supporter, telling me that there might an IRQ conflict. I checked, and there were 6(!) different devices on that IRQ. But i can't figure out how to change the irq of the 1394-port. Anyone?
Superthanks

At least I found the problem here: I used to configure my Windows to use M Audio soundcard, as well the sequencer....
Now I realise that letting onboard soundcard as Windows default, and M Audio for aplications, my 410 works 100% ok!!! No more freezes, and actually the hardware output level now works also!!!!

Cool! Glad you got it sorted. I'm now using a FW Cardbus card to run my FW410, as the connection on the back of the laptop got too unreliable for gigs.

Do u have a 6 pin now??? U mean a PCMIA card right?
Did u make any performance test to buy it? Cause I was looking for something like this, so I do not need to power supply the soundcard, but a lot of ppl said to me that doing this, sometimes u can overload the computer. So they said to me to do some tests..
At the end: did u feel any performance decrease?

Yes, a PCMCIA card... It's a 6-pin cable now, so it's more secure, but there's no power as the card needs an external power supply for that. Powering the unit down the cable is tricky too, because you can fry the firewire chip in the card/laptop if you hot-plug it. Powering the 410 in this way will not make any difference to the performance though. And neither will using a FW card like I do, as both the FW card and the on-board FW socket both use the laptop's PCI bus at the same speed.

Kudos to you But unfortunately, this does not help me, because i've actually uninstalled the onboard card in the OS i use for production, disabled absolutely every system-sounds, and it still acts up.
And to Colin OOOD: As for a PCMCIA, the soundcard i originally bought was pcmcia, then i found out my laptop didn't have pcmcia-slot, only friggin smart-card or whatever it's called... |
