Slightly offtopic, sorry.
A really weird one: My comp doesn't seem to be able to play audio CDs. I installed a newer version of media player, and it still doesn't work. I see the tracklist (before I installed the new version, I couldn't even see the tracklist), but once I try to actually play a track, an error message appears saying it doesn't recognize this file type.

Was it like that all the time, or just started to happen for some reason?

Didn't try winamp, but I tried the regular windows CD player (this comp has 98 se installed), and it didn't work either (disc wasn't recognized at all).
It just happend, but I can't relate it to an installation of some prog 'cause I didn't try to play CDs on this comp for some time now. |

When you insert the CD to the drive, does it recognize it as an audio cd?
Open my computer, it should say Audio CD there, for the CD-ROM.

Yes, it's recognized as an audio CD.
Can I uninstall media player completely without fucking up anything seriously (it's a part of windows after all)?

theres 2 options:
1. your cdrom is not physicly connected into your motherboard or sound card
2. your sound card is not set right (hardwear to softwear connections)
good luck.

Nope.
If that would be the case, he just wouldn't hear a thing. But he's getting an error message.
It's a filetype problem, so I doubt it's hardware related.
