Presets!? What the...

I get the impression that some artists do a great effort to produce their own sounds so that they don't sound like the others.

For example, I'm wondering what the guys from Infected Mushroom use to make their unique sounds. I believe Erez builds stuff with Reaktor but from what I've heard it is complicated to make your own instruments with Reaktor because of all the modules etc.

Every damn Synth out there has a shitload of presets shipped with and I find that rather annoying because people tend to use presets for their music instead of making an effort to create their own stuff, which is a lot harder but it enables you to learn things you wouldn't learn just by using presets plus it gives you originality.

What's your opinion on this?

Regards

It's obvious that if u use your own "presets" u'll get a diferent sound and also that it is harder to get there.Because u allways have the impression that the preset sounds better, for us to get to a special sound takes us days of hard work until u say to your self: This is good enough.
Investigation makes part of the process, oh! and there is taste also.

The presets also assist in teaching you how to make the sounds close to what you want. I suggest that you take a preset that you really really like and figure out how it is done. Then try to duplicate it on your own. I make it a point to tweak any preset that I like and can't make on my own...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Beiing able to make your own presets do not guarantee you originality. It may be the opposite. Being able to copy other's sounds might make you more unoriginal than using presets. About infected mushroom. The synth they most use is Nord Lead. And also it's not the presets that counts. If infected mushroom gave you all their presets and you played them, you wouldn't be as impressed as you think. It's how you tweak the knobs in the preset that counts. And also some presets may not sound good to you, but used properly they may sound great. For example a preset may sound bad if you play single notes, but great if you are playing chords. Or the speed you are playing may play a difference. I remember with cube x, there was one preset that it was ok, but I wasn't so impressed. Until I heared penta using it in lost in space (that yeeeeeeooowww sound). Then I was really impressed.

Hey there Carthago...
You forget that from every preset it is
possible to make many many loops that sounds
different because of the Arpeggiators, effects, eq, modulation, etc...

Dont forget the function called "dump"!
With dumping you can transfer presets from
your computer to your synth!!!

Peace..

Of course it's a good thing to make your own sounds: that's what makes synths such excellent machines. On the other hand it may distract you from actually ,making music. A Stradivarius violin comes with only one preset, but learn to play it and you can bring across every emotion you want. It's probably best to strike a balance between making sounds and making music. Take enough time to do both, but don't drift off too much in either direction

So sure that Astral Projection, Infected Mushroom, Doof, Astrix etc. simply delete presets because they create any single line from scratch, find their groove and save their own . Just doing it in the NOAH -> doin' again in ProTools -> and finally doing in the final master and you got that for them preset means nothing .           ~~~~~~~~~~

How come everybody knows how Infected work ? You may call me Damien the Devil, but i'm almost sure they have used a preset now and then to find the sound they needed and then tweaked it a little to breeze some life into it and to get it to fit the track better.

phunster - no one deletes presets.
in fact presets are probably every composer's blessing.

Having presets, I can manipulate them in the way I need - I can learn the synth features well - I can come up with a sound so fast that I don't lose my flow.

obviously having the same sound as the neighbour is not exciting - but using presets doesn't mean it's gonna sound the same.
