try programming a DX7 (FM7), absynth, or other FM style synth without some presets and a lot of free time, then the value of presets will become apparent
using a preset is like picking up a fender guitar. you have a sound as a building block, and that may be what you need for a particular piece. you can always experiment with it and modify if for your own tone..
nothing wrong with both methods. but i'm sure people that claim to use no presets probably use some sound that sounds like a preset...
even Kraftwork, who built their own synths still used a standard 808/909
but of course coming up with cool sounds, either by layering samples or synthesis is half the fun!
peace and love!

ya presets arent usually the sound you want anyway they are there to beused as diskotek said but think how many people have the same presets as you even rare ones have slutted their way through tracks all over the world and therefore lose their value I dont know about you but when I hear a psy track that sounds good has good composition and production I cant get into it if the leads and other synths are typical even if you gett a sound through the init patch that may not be the most "psy" sound if its unique itll be stuck in my mind
if youre gonna use a preset at least effect the ass off it
