well i just have to ask in here... because its the right place, since lot of mexicans users love to discuss about this, and i got a bit tired of being erasing and marking offtopics on the mexico section.
so the thing is... what u think about this whole presets thing? iv seen lots of users sharing their presets even here, some others got it from some web pages and stuff i personally havent used lots of them but some of them are really nice, however to make a bit clear the thing, do u stand for them?(find them usefull, hate them, or sometimes)
the other thing is about the style cuz lots of ppl seems to relate the presets with the style of music, about how it can sound similar, or not, u think the so famous "artists presets" can make u sound without style ?
and finally, this 2 things leave the... are u doing ur own music ? this is were i say... of course... i have been sitting here for hrs somedays without getting just nothing and sometimes i love what comes out of my mind...
so i think the topic is clear ? and i will like to listen to all u ppl im sure some mexican ppl will love to share their toughts about it and even more ... |

i never use any presets, while i make my own for private use. i alsways make the sound from init patches - it is much more interesting for me. i like to think i control the sound, not someone=)
but presets are usefull when you get a new software - synth or effect. just for examining what it can do.

i ve been looking for some serius stuff for my virus for 2 years and i got nothing.
During this period i ve made my bank with some cool stuff.
Usually nobody shares quality stuff and i guess its a r8 think to do cause or else why not sharing full tracks and just rename them?
Its a matter of money, mind, and life's spending for having good results.
Trade is another option..

I think presets are good to learn how to use a synth, like makus says especially if u got a new one. With presets u see and hear the all the possibilities of the synth, at least if the presets are good.
For making music, presets can be a good base for sounds. I have a preset collection with my own presets (but not that much) for basic sounds, like a saw lead for zeta, so u can load this and tweak it for the track like u need it. Surely u can do this also with presets u didn't make.

Not everyone is making music for the same reasons, so with that in mind, I think it's okay to use presets and call it your own. You are sequencing it, right. And chances are, your going to tweak it a little bit, even if it's to fit in the mix, or apply effects to your taste.
Some people may say otherwise, but you could carry the argument further, stating that it's not your music unless you design the synth yourself, etc etc. I think it's the difference between an artist, and an artisan.
Can anyone here say that every piece they've ever written (partial or complete track, released or not), was designed with every sound from scratch? I think we all have to start from somewhere, and we all have to evolve on our own path in our own time, so if it's your thing, then fine, and if it's not, then fine.
And as Colin pointed out, many established producers have used presets (even after their rise to fame)...

however for me there's nothing quite as satisfying as selecting 'Initialise Patch' in Z3ta and ending up with a kickass lead sound.

I use presets as such only rarely, for example when I want a physical modelling sound. No lead, bass, pad or fx patch will come out in such a form that it is recognisable. |

i use factory\downloaded presets when i'm not experienced with a synth, that's what their meant for imho. i also save presets so i have a personal bank that i tweak and save again with time, so i don't have to work the lazy factory presets. i prefer starting from scratch but at this point i can only do this with 2 synths (vanguard and albino) and even sometimes you have a sound you remembered doing but don't remember how and want to use it or know how you made it. but starting from scratch is always more rewarding as colin said |

That is a bit ridiculous though really. Was Jimi Hendrix a musician? Did he handcraft his own guitars and engineer his recordings? To take that argument to a further conclusion you could say that you have to make the synth, or design the software yourself. Or maybe you could take it a few steps further still and say that you must be the one to have discovered physics and mathematics aswell to be truly original.

I see presets as a starting point....of course in some synths like FM7 is harder to do our own bank....
With my fav synths I build my own presets, about a year ago I lost my nordlead FAT leads presets hehe I was so frustrated I didn´t touch it again for some months...Now I got back to it and doing a really good preset bank.....finally...wich made me fall in love for it again
But I´ve heard presets in so many tracks if its really good placed I don´t really see the problem (its fun to listen to the creative use of them) and probably over 90% of listeners don´t even know what a preset is.....
