So, I've been using the Waves PAZ Analyzer for a long time to determine what my RMS reading is for mastering my full tracks and gauging how big my bass is. I recently checked out the Sonalksis Free G to see if their readings are similar. I was surprised to find that they are not. I'm seeing a 2 decibel discrepancy between the plugins. I've just been trusting what's been coming out of the waves, but I'm wondering what's more accurate. Does anyone use anything else for RMS reading that you think is more accurate than either of these plugs?           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

How do you find the RMS using ableton? I've only seen the Peak for the wave on the mixer...

And Inspector isn't gonna cut it. It's giving me the same readings as the sonalksis stuff is, but sound forge gives me the same reading that the waves does as well as what the statistics in cubase does... wierd...

Funny enough, the paz readout is the same as the cubase statistics or the statistics in sound forge... it's just the sonalksis and inspector xl that are giving me different readouts. There's no way that my full tracks are at -6 db RMS..... Especially since the mastering engineers that I use usually do it at -9 to -10 db. I did the pepsi challenge to see what the readout is, and even the ones where the engineers tell me it's at -9.5 is tell me -7 on inspector or Free G... kinda weird, but if waves is wrong, then everyone seems to be using the same plugs for metering... I'll have to see if the penguin audio plug says the same thing... Odd. I mean if the waves is right, I'll just use that, but sometimes I wonder if I've been using something that gives me an incorrect reading.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

What's wrong about the Free G ?
I would also use the Wavelab.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

When I'm doing mixing for my bass and for mastering my own stuff I need a Realtime RMS meter. I could just export and do a trial and error, but that's an extra step that I don't really need. I do my mastering inside cubase, so I'd rather not have to open another program just to check and see what the rms level is. If you use the statistics in either cubase or sound forge (my preferred audio editor) it will give you the same readings as the waves PAZ. However if you use the free G or Inspector, you get a reading that is at least 2 db louder than the readout that the waves or the statistics gives you. One of the reasons why I don't use wavelab for mastering (or anything for that matter) is the plugin chain. You're still limited to a certain amount of plugins on the chain, and yes cubase is too, but I have a nice workaround using group channels that works really good when you're trying to master several tracks to have the same volume. I need a good rms meter for that as well as seeing how much RMS my bass has. For the sake of argument, I just used the global analysis in Wavelab and guess what? Same reading as Cubase, Soundforge and Waves.

It really just doesn't make sense that the rms on a mastered track that only has about 1 db of attenuation on the L3 to be at -5 to -6 RMS...Especially when the engineers that master the thing using hardware and software tell you that it's -9 or -10

In the end, I'll probably just keep using the waves, because at least that seems to at least read the average rms and is giving the same readouts as the analyzers done post prod. It still would be nice to see what Live has to say on this matter, but I think that I found the answer to my question.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

You can put Voxengo Elephant on master, it has RMS meters (don't know about how accurate they are though), also it'll give you the idea about how your track will sound after limiting, that might be useful info also. To watch for separate tracks RMS just 'solo' them.           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

the diffrent readings are all acurate but use diffrent speed reading and sometime mono/stereo reading.
use RMS thats good for your ear then check how much is that in numbers.
or read with whatever u wanna use mastered track that is 'golden piece' for your ears and this is your 'magic number'
and did u see my previous answer about change the reading on PAZ
all it meens u better work with whatever u get used to that makes sense to you
for me -9 -10 yes is great but i know it reflects on Bob K system to -5 rms (by RME digicheck)
so -5 = -10 sometimes
trust ear not gear
