i'm checking out some preamps at the moment.
haven't had much experience with them before so i thought to ask for some recommendations.
at the moment i'm leaning towards tube preamps rather than solid state preamps because i like the warmer and personal sound
my main focus is on sound and component quality rather than a wide range of different processing options (no all-in-one processing tools).
i was thinking that my budget would be around 500€ until i came across this beauty:

so, what do you think?

here's a nice little article about what to consider when buying a preamp:

a preamp for recording what ? the uad 610 can sound very colored and smouth ,no experience with it but i already heard it on some recordings ,it s can sound round and phat. i suspect it s a bit slow so maybe not good for punchy sounds unless you want to smooth them but it s just speculation.
worht a try cause the coloration can sound really nice to me...depend tastes

if it s just for coloring and you want all sort of tube color the culture vulture is a good candidate

yes and no. i want to buy ONE preamp that i can use mostly for instruments mentioned above and vocals.
i think it'd be interesting to use it on synths too f.e. the nordlead and also some analog stuff with weaker signals.
is there a problem, officer?           "no one ever sweats on a plug-in" -moby

I had the TLAudio 5051 in Uni and compared it right next to the Joemeek VC1Qcs which I ended up getting. The 12AX7 valves are not the best thing around (although you could change them for something better) but the TLAudio Ivory range works on 120Volt rails and the signal to noise ratio was not great. The Blue series (VP I think they are called) sounded much better as they worked on 240Volt rails, but they were also much more expensive.

From internet hear'say the Avalon ones are very transparent, ART Pro have some haters and the UA are generally favoured, especially the UA LA 610.
Search some threads on Gearslutz, there are people with massive studios on there and you'll find a lot more hands on opinions than on here.
I have a friend's studio with the AMS Neve 1073 which is stereo and absolutely brilliant, as is its price...2000euros+....I could build a new Livewire modular with that cash...
As much as I would like to have a great sounding pre, I can think of other things that will have a greater positive impact on my music right now, so its out of my budget... for now...

Peace.

thanks for the reply. so it seems the only thing worth considering around 500€ is the 700€ UA SOLO 610
quality preamps start at around 1500€ and upwards. i'm perhaps better off buying a cheap (50-150€) preamp to get started and start saving for a UA LA 610 or the likes... thomann has got a interesting bundle that incl. a UAD-2 satellite duo core with the LA 610.

Yeah I saw that Thomann deal, weird as they also sell the LA610 at the same price, so they basically offer the Duo for free!
I would not get a cheap pre-amp to be honest. Search around Ebay, you should find something good for 500euros.

just stumbled upon the bass buddy:
http://www.philjonesbass.com/pjbdirect/product_info.php?products_id=39
my e-bass actually started the whole search for a preamp. perhaps i should just focus on that and go for a bass amp.
