It's not a rule -2dB or -6dB should make no difference as long as the track doesn't clip.

a -2dBFS peak can potentially clip upon playback on some devices. |

True but many people still burn to a CD and check the mix on other systems. I personally recommend this for those working in untreated rooms or those who haven't yet got to the stage where they are confident in how well their mix will travel. |

In that case, if you're worried about this issue I'd recommend using something like the Oxford Limiter with no gain, to deal with any intersample peaks that may occur. With a non-clipping unmastered mix though, the track is only likely to peak at its maximum level relatively infrequently, and if it does clip on playback it will do so even more infrequently, and I don't think it would affect the overall listening experience or even any overall mix judgements. Some people might prefer to be safe rather than sorry though.

I think you are probably quite right. I rarely peak over -6dBFS. That's with no limiters and no conscious effort during the mix. But then I use the K-system which I find more useful.
I agree with your early comments regarding the misuse of limiting and how that can be a nuisance for the mastering process.
If we advice someone to not peak above a certain level yet ignore RMS value then we could effectively be encouraging brickwall limiting. |

This is true in theory... however I think the phrase "make sure there is no processing on the mix buss" is fairly unambiguous! My opinion is that mix RMS is irrelevant to the producer/artist, who should be concentrating on making the best music they can, and to the mix engineer, who should be concentrating on making the music sound as good as they can to their highly-trained ears; beyond making sure the final product is in the right format and doesn't clip IMO they shouldn't be thinking about the mastering process.

I agree that they shouldn't be thinking about the mastering process. This is one reason why I use the K-System. I don't need to even look at a meter during mixing, of course I check my peaks during tracking.
But in reality many producers are clipping and over compressing. It has got to the point now where many people don't actually consider compression as a way of adding colour, its all about dynamics and RMS. Its a shame really. There are few modern albums (on CD) that I can listen to all the way through because of this hideously fatiguing sound.

Thank you once again D2 Also, I would interested in hearing some demo's or examples of tracks you've created, as I can see you have some knowledge under your belt and I'm curious of what your track quality sounds like. |
