you can try to do the same with all the rythm ,with a group, this trick is often used in hip hop (you can try to add the bass too).the compressed signal must be more a feel than heard ,experiment with frequency to boost with the eq.
not very clear ...sorry for bad english

i don't like to compress things a lot... try using some distortion on the snare to make it powerful TC Sonic Destructor (TC Native Bundle) recommended.

Sample a few Plump DJs, General Midi, Soul of Man, Stereo 8 records, or some old 70's funk records.
Put the snares in your tunes.

It's about layering different snares with different tonal
characteristics to make one "phat" snare that occupies
a wide frequency range.
For example you can take 3 snares: LPF the first one,
BPF the second one, and HPF the third one, then adjust
the crossover points to taste (depends on your snares).
You can also use a PSP Vintage Warmer (in limiter mode)
or PSP Mix Saturator to overdrive yo snare to the max.

For me it's always easier to mix a "big" snare by using
subtractive EQing only, instead of trying to make
a small snare bigger by boosting up the hell out of it.

Some more tips to phatten' up the snares:
1. Short gate reverb, but not too much, obviously.
2. Layer a copy of the same snare with higher pitch.
3. Layer a crash or cymbal on the top of the snare.
4. Never forget to adjust the envelope to make things tight.
5. Never compress before adjusting the envelope.
6. Add another envelope to control the pitch...
7. Try a little bit of white noise with the snare, it's
sounds good with reverb. 8. Use quality samples only.

There's lots of other cool techniques that i don't remember
at the moment, probably because i don't use them oftenly.          >>> FOR SALE: Mac-clone OSX86 Audio Workstation <> Perfect computer for Logic 9 Pro <<<

well boost , whatever sounds right for that "particular" snare sample ... stop giving specfic frequencies ..

^^^The best advice in this thread, btw.

For example: Boosting 207hz = boosting the G#3 note,
boosting up 1174hz = boosting the D6 note innit.
The problem is that maybe one of those notes
may not work with the notes of your song, it
will create a dissonance, and i guess you
looking for resonance, not dissonance.           >>> FOR SALE: Mac-clone OSX86 Audio Workstation <> Perfect computer for Logic 9 Pro <<<

Mixdown, mixdown, mixdown. Even the wimpiest snare can sound like a monster if you EQ it right and fit it in a vicious way in your track. Reverb kinda "cheats" on this bit because it adds a lot of frequencies and stereo spread to a sample, but then again, the price of using a reverb too much is a murky sounding track.

If you want it to really sound thick, there's a necessity of "cheating" a bit. Change your sequences (leads, FX, whatever) so the snares that are on the beats will be one of 3-4 samples playing (meaning, bassdrum+snare+fx+ ONE LEAD AT THE MOST) at the most and then compress the living hell out of it, add some reverb, and then raise it's volume as much as you can (as long as you don't feel it sounds too loud).

http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/53221/forum/2 is a short tutorial I wrote about getting drumloops to fit in a track in a more general way, hope it's of some help.          http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

oh yeah, don't fixate on the snares and claps. There are a lot of sounds that are perfect as 'snare', like 2 supple plastic 30cm measurers slapped together, or by breaking one of those plastic things, then u get a nice snap (but not very handy, if u didn't record it right the first time u just broke something for nothing ). Ur own butt is a nice snaredrum too, if slapped correctly I know it seems strange, but good snares are everywhere around u, just listen...

There are two rules of thumb I learned a while back about EQs that seem to work very well:

1. FIRST CUT, THEN BOOST.
2. CUT MORE, BOOST LESS.

Our first instinct is to find the frequency we want more of and boost that, which generally causes problems. Instead, try cutting the frequencies you don't want to hear first. If that's not enough, give it a little boost. Any good book on mixing will tell you that. It took me a while to get used to this idea, but once you get the hang of it there's no going back.

And remember, a bad sample will always be bad, no matter how you polish it. And EQ'ing befor the mix is normally a waste of time.

So, to sum it all up, get a good sample, EQ it just enough so that it "works", finish your song, then apply more EQ in the mix.

As for compression after or before EQ... well, that's a whole different topic.
