Hi all I'm a bit skeptical on the idea of using any kind of hub for USB gear.

It's obvious that in the case of sound cards, this is not recommended.

What about the case of MIDI gear, such as keyboard controllers, drum pad boxes, etc.?

I only have three USB slots on my laptop and so many things I want to plug into it

i always think, when i can relieve the work my laptop usb has to solve on power , it might be a good thing...

so i got a belkin hub with 7 slots , all my main stuff inserted like dongles, midi keyboard and controller stuff..Harddrives..

and am pretty satisfied actualy..

some powered usb hubs do noise , but not the belkin ones imo..

hope that helps a little..

cheers

Would you say that sort of rig is live set worthy?

Are all 7 slots filled?

How long have you jammed at once on ableton with midi messages coming back and forth on multiple controllers and clips running from projects from the external hard drive?

Sorry for all the questions, I've been traditionally skittish about using hubs in a live set environment.

hm i never had any problems with this unit actualy..no its not very often where i really run all 7 slots at the same time..but dont see any problem with it..

i would use it for live performance..actualy see no other way around anyway..
got my mouse/steinberg dongle/ilok/nocturn/harddrive/nanopad,then one in spare and the other on my macbook..

in a live situation i would plug the harddrive into the other free one on my mac yes..

working like this for several hours actualy with cubase..

as i used live i had another smaller device not self powered..but in cubase its ok, streaming/writing samples and so on with no probs..

hope that helps..

i got this one here..

3 USB?

Lucky you!....i only have 2 on my Macbook.

USB Hub is good for Midi Controllers but you need a specific kind!

The thing with Hub's is that if they have 4 slots, they usually only have one converter (for all 4).

The better USB hubs have a converter for each slot.

Now the bitch is....they don't tell you which ones have a converter for each and which don't!

Apparently the Belkin USB Hub is good.

Oh yes....it needs to be powered!

i dont think its a biatch cause this power actualy powers all my midi stuff and therefore takes off the pressure from my actualy usb bus..

so that is a very good thing, when its comes to stability and when you consider the overall heat of the macbook..
