Hi,
I'm going to Europe for 2 months at the end of thio month and have a couple of gigs planned to launch my debut album. Now I have never left the US before and I am bring my laptop and soundcard with me to Europe. I know that the power across the pond is different than here. What do I need to do to make sure my computer and soundcard work abroad?

hi mubali
it's best to check your laptop and soundcard what supply they need, and then buy a bunch of power supplies, if yours from the us don't work. (hehe i've never been to the us so i don't know that, you tell me?)
we have here 230V AC power, maybe the connectors could make problems, they can even vary from country to country. so a bunch of power supplies for your needs (dc in for the soundcard for example), and a bunch of multi purpose connectors should help i think!
good luck with european power and with your gigs |

It depends of your power charger.
I have a powerbook and it works 110V/230V.
in the US I just had to plug-in an adaptor and it just work'd fine..
If you may be using a transformer be sure that it has a safety check so that you will not burn your laptop!!

yeah for the laptop you don´t need, most come already equiped with converters and do it automatically, u just need the plug adaptor like robomarke said.
You do need a transformer for the sound card...and most contries in europe power comes in 220 to 240V, but shape of plug may vary from country to country, at least in england is diferent from all the rest (like with everything) but its very easy and very cheap to find adaptors in any electronics shop |

ahoi mubali , tis is mulu
yeah, i had the same issue when i moved to the US, with gear from europe and africa.
My mixer, synth and pioneer 100 is made for 220 V only, thus I needed a powerconverter, easily obtainable from most electtonic stores. Otherwise I brought a Numark axis 9 that has a switch for dual power outlets, one for 110 V and one for 220 V.
So, check out if your soundcard has dual power outlets, otherwise hook up a converter.
As for the laptop, same shit, but I've seen most US laptops can handle 110-220 V.
When are you leaving, and returning?
We want you to jam @ our party in humboldt if your free in march? (im working with gayatri) |

I will be back in the states March 21st and I'm leaving on Jan 31st... Cool, I shouldn't have too big of an issue then. However this brings me to another question. I usually keep my own powerstrip in my gear bag. Would it be simpler to just get the power converter for the power strip, or would that severely screw things up?

Depends if your other gear have own converters 230-110 etc etc..
