I wrote this post the other day on how to be productive, and how to get some of your best ideas out of yourself and into your music.

I think it can be really helpful for anyone in music, and anyone really.

I want to hear what your thoughts are on this as well.

Good tips about the seperation of music and internet.

My way of dealing with this with only one computer is to have two different user accounts - one with all my torrent/game/internet bullshit and one with JUST music and no browser besides internet explorer. Not exactly doing a lot of browsing for pleasure with that POS.

I'm kind of wary of the $100 thing or any forced deadline on music though.

It could easily force you into a position where you don't really feel like making music but you 'have' to in order to meet some deadline. When I'm not into making music, I don't make music. When I am...then I do and I enjoy it immensely

I'd rather enjoy my creative time and be free-form with it than have it be locked in.

I can totally see setting deadlines or 'x hour per day' on the technical aspects though. As in, doing 20 minutes a day of scale work on your instrument, or spending a half hour a day reading up on x y z process, or mixing/EQing stuff in the music. Those elements that are critical to the music but are not dependent on that creative spark so much.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

See with me, having that deadline - it makes me want to finish it, and make it awesome. I had a DJ gig with my friend a little while back and the idea of being able to play it out in front of tons of people was very inspiring.

The money leverage thing I use for different things.
For example: When I was being lazy for too long and didn't get a demo done that I really wanted to get done fast, this helped me a lot. I had a bunch of different computer issues, like audio not bouncing properly and mixes needing to be redone after playing them on different systems, and it got so tedious it would have taken me forever to finish what I wanted to finish otherwise.

You can totally use it to your advantage.

Thanks for reading it too man. This article's my longest one yet. I think the longer style might be cool though for the future ones.

i don't get this topic. if you enjoy making music, why would you have to force yourself to do it by giving money away if you don't meet a self-set deadline?

i slept 2 hours this night because i had to get up early and just had to keep working on a new track before going to sleep

Skimmed through, pretty interesting ideas. 100% agree with the future booking being a motivator. Working with deadlines can motivate you to work on a track, but I don't think it's the best way to get a quality result. It can be a negative if you're just finishing something for the sake of meeting a deadline rather than finishing something to the point where you're happy with it.

I think the best motivators are ones that are a beginning- such as inspiration after a festival, rather than working towards an end. Any other factors that motivate you to produce music are best, but not something you can control as well.
