SO... you know how to pan a line to the left, right, make it wide, play with the eqs and stuff... but my question is... how do you position a sound in the back, so far the only thing i've found is a spinaudio plugin that does that...
So how do you do it without one?

You can use a reverb with a long reverb-time, and/or a long pre-delay. Delays and pre-delays longer than about 100 ms. tend to push the sound away from the listener. |

let me see if i get it right ...
if do you mean "sound at the back" by placing two more speakers at your back so it's very easy task serch the web a bit there are tons of sorround plug-ins which you can set with few very simple clicks where you want the sound -" in" each speaker you wish.
if you mean sound at the back like i see it so try use some sounds with low and-or mid charectars (or cut the hi) then you should try playing with the reverb as said before maybe with late-reflaction and ofcourse good compressore to place this "layer" at the back of the track.
