Looking for something small & portable to capture high quality sound from anywhere I take it. These sounds will be used in my music. What do you use/reccomend? Digital/tape, built in mic or external?

You could use Dat recorder or Minidisc..or your Laptop straight ahead..and what mic..its like..if you got the choice..then you should experiment..every mic got its own character so try several..it alway depends on what signal you wanna record..

I use an MAudio Microtrack, the Microphone it comes with is really excellent, but it has 1/4 inch phantom power plugs or a stereo jack in for better microphones if you have them. Also has a built in limiter and level record if you're recording louder things like a band or close up drums.

Records upto 24bit 48k and straight to flash card, so no tape noise/whirring.

Plug it in, works like a hard disk, pull the clips straight off.

There are some alternatives Marantz, Zoom H2, Eridol all do variations.

As much as I dislike MAudio (had various products go wrong and still dealing with returns department) this is a good little device. Although they are all much the same I'm sure, read some reviews and take your pick.

M-Audio microtrack seems the right choice. DAT and Minidisc are obsolete now (except hi-MD, but Minidisc is using ATTRAC format, which is lossy.           V/A Floating Mirror - OUT NOW - with Celles, Midimal, Electrypnose, Melodix, Troll Scientists, Yab Yum, Gaspard, Ajja, Cradle of Beats! Info on

It's all about the H2!

Seriously I'm not an expert on feild recording equipment, but I got one of these guys and it sounds beautiful for the price and it's so damn useable.

You can also use it as a USB mic... or it can also be a fancy memory stick.

oh yeah... and hours of fun

this thing sounds amazing! Excellent quality. I'm sure the more expensive ones may be even better but this thing has exceeded my expectations. Great bang for the price for sure
