damage,

i totaly agree with everything you said!!.,

i dont think you are a bit arogant about it.,

experimentation rulez!!.,

it will show you landscapes you can only imagine.,

and you will understand your gear better too

i also think that trying to recreate someones sound is a form of experimentation.,
BUT, if you ask someone HOW they made their sound then thats not experimentation at all that's just copying.,

and sometimes its just not possible to exactly recreate a sound with your current setup.,

anyway.,
greets.,

damage teaching some impacient dumbs damage good lesson for does who are very impaciient and whant everything on the plate ready to make ,... u just did what is more than correct 70 % of this part of the forum , want that everyone explain how they do a complete song or a lead or a bass,, this is unbelieveble just like damage say what he have done is only to give u somme force to try to find out alone , i find out alone ,, i only have some tips on basic production 6 years ago , since that i fightr alone , and im here today always leaarning

so like somme ppl sayed here damage is arrogant i dont think at all is a nice person that allready have been in portugal , maybe he dont remeber me , but we speak 5 min in the party in the nort of the coutry , and for me for what i think its a really nice guy , that can help if he can ,

so dont be so rudish for does who can give u a real help , and when i talk in real help is helping in the way of not saying everything , just saying the essencial for u can learn for yourself the rest

so keep it cool and think before writing

i asked tsyoshi some advice ones at a party and wanted him to tell me what he though of this track i did (wwwwaaaaaayyyyyyy back in the day). he told me `you be your own judge`. i thought, what an arrogant basterd.

now i understand what he meant. best advice ever. worked for me. will probably work for you too.

Indeed Deon....

As soon as you start running after other artist for a sense of approval, you tend to forget the reason why you were writing music to begin with...

Lots of the newer producers are looking for "instant gratification" load this preset, tweak the filter, and you're done...

Some of my most enjoyable moments in the studio is mucking about and accidentally coming up with a sound that one of my favorites used, and actually being able to know how it was done and taking those techniques to other sounds... But you're right it's all about distortion... Making the clean sounds dirty and the dirty sounds clean... (sound familiar?)           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

it`s impossible for me to remember how i did that lead in porno fever. did to many new leads after that one and all of them were done in a difirent way.

i got a tip for you:
save all your leads presets in the project library and also your mixer channel presets.
that way you can always go back to leads you made days ago. i work like that and i find it very usfull (expacially when remixing).

yes many producers do that, but i prefer to do everything from scratch every time. much more interesting for me and i never have trouble making a good lead anyway. experience really helps after a couple of years.

but you`re right.a good tip to give to young producers.

great thread, great tips... And in fact, between the lines we got lotsa tips on how a 'typical' damage-lead comes to life (i do feel that a damage-lead is recognisable, it has a certain taste to it and most damage leads consist with that taste...) I certainly am going to try that distortion/EQ/freq-analyser trick tnx for that.

But I don't agree on starting 'from scratch'. I also try to be original, and every song i made (not that they are really good songs already) has 1 or more 'from scratch' sounds that's truly original, but they all contain sounds i made somewhere else too... What i mean is, once u made a certain sound u don't have to obligate urself never to use that sound just for the sake of originality (i made some great toms a few years ago, and they sound exactly how i want toms to sound, so why would i restart every time i want some toms?)... Even a lead can be reused in a different sounding song if u ask me...

I do agree when it comes to the sampleCD/preset hoggers who think that that is a shortcut to becoming a good artist, while they just lengthen their own process to becoming a good artist like that. And it's good that a known artist says these things sometimes, because if people like me say it nobody wants to believe it... Ofcourse u can learn from a preset (never from a sample cd, sample cd's just breed people who want 'the easy way out') and use that knowledge to ur advantage...

hey, never said i only use all my sounds just ones hehehe.

i just don`t save presets on fx and channels, but it`s really up to the artists and what they feel comfortable with.

i`m just a bit of a freak, so...

my 2c ....

I have been producing for a couple of years but without any production skill.

I now have done a course...and have some skills....and THAT its self and allowed me to explore myself and MY sound more...
Cuz now instead of struggling to get my sound right...and sounds right....i can just create and be confident that i will get a clean sound or at least closer to what my original idea was.

So now when i experiment....i am not just playing around and forgetting .....i am learning!!!

just my 2c...

Its working for me!!!

And to be a true artist....u need to like your own stuff. So make YOUR music....in the end it will be the best reward.....better than being the Number 1 producer.
