Australopithecus afarensis started to organize themselves in groups between 3.9 and 2.9 million years ago. With that dynamic they were giving the first steps towards the formation of mankind. The landscapes of Eastern Africa were the background. Both fantasy and need were fueling their development of spirit, mind and body.
Fast forward into the 20th century: archeologists were pursuing the missed link of humans in Ethiopia. Suddenly they found the remains of the skeleton of the first australopithecus afarensis to be known. Modern man was listening to the track “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”, by The Beatles, when he found his ancient brother. Poetically they called it Lucy - as homage to the music they were listening to.
We’ve been having breakthrough moments like this at Boom. Watching groups of people together under the same philosophy of freedom; being in nature, as did our ancestors, and respecting it; an independent intercultural-festival rooted in the idea of alternative values for the emergence of a new culture. Looking back to our genetic lineage we still look at the universe with the same vision of the australopithecus afarensis: We Are All.
Boom’s Adventures On The Path To Sustainable Entertainment
This is the first in a trilogy of newsletters that will be published on a weekly basis. This edition provides information on best sustainable projects held at Boom, demonstrating how we solved challenges about food, energy, waste and water. Please feel free to give us your feedback, be participatory for a new culture of global awareness.
Composting The Nature…
We’ve collected 42,000 kilograms of organic matter from the 17 restaurants that were operating at Boom. In the next 6 months this matter will be composting. Hopefully next spring we will have around 20 tons of ready compost to use in the local farms. The compostable toilets have collected 59,000 kilograms of human excrements. The composting process started already and within 12 months we’ll have the biological outcome: 30,000 kilograms of compost, a biological fertilizer for Mother Earth. Thanks for depositing your minerals! They will be well used into re-establishing the life of the soil.
Recycling Vegetable Oil
Boom developed a project to handle its energy system! “Your Oil Is Music” collected waste vegetable oil from the local region of Idanha-a-Nova. Additionally we have purchased oil in order to avoid using fossil fuels to power Boom 2008. In the end we’ve consumed 45,000 liters of waste vegetable oil avoiding the emission of 117,000 kilograms of CO2 to the atmosphere. We’ve collected as well 200 liters of vegetable oil from the Boom restaurants and used it on our generators.
Showers And Water Systems
Our system for treating the waters from the showers consisted on both evaporation and aquatic plants. On the first stage, 200,000 liters of water evaporated feeding the natural cycle of water. 1,200,000 liters of water are now on a lake for a further treatment based on aquatic plants. No water from the showers was thrown away.
Support The Glocal
Most of Boom structures will turn into compost within the next few months. 90% of all structures were made out of both organic and compostable materials. And the straw bales from the bio-constructed structure walls are being sold to local farmers at below cost prices. More minerals for the region!
Bug Notes
The ‘Bug’ that was assaulting the Portuguese territory and thus Boom has a name already. All medical analysis that we’ve been collecting indicates the name of one bacteria: Shigella Sonnai. The first focus of the bacteria was found this year in Iberian Peninsula and is common worldwide. The antibiotics commonly used for treatment are ampicillin, trimethoprim / sulfamethoxazole (also known as Bactrim* or Septra*), ceftriaxone (Rocephin*), or, among adults, ciprofloxacin.
Too Much Rubbish!
From the 11th to the 22nd of August we’ve removed 230,000 kilograms of rubbish from the Boom venue. That means that in average each human being at Boom produced around 1 kilo of garbage per day!!! That is far too much!
Recycling and Reusing
Boom developed a project of recycling the abandoned structures of other events in Portugal. One of our main results was recycling 7 tons of iron that we used at Boom.
Avoiding Chemical Treatments
By using compostable toilets we avoided 106,5 m3 of excrements to be dumped into the public services of sewage treatment based on chemicals.

Hello everyone!
In the last ten weeks I've been working on a video about our small team's experience of this year's most amazing festival, BooM. Today it's ready and you can all enjoy this 67 minute long compilation. The video contains nine parts and it can be seen on youtube, but I'm going to make it available for download later.
The videos were recorded by my friend, Spacehippie: http://www.youtube.com/user/spacehippie
