im a bit confused on what polyrythms are exactly. i skimmed the artical and have a general idea, but thats about it.
i know some "musicology" so it was interesting at some points, confusing at others. ill have to get into more depth when i get more time.

I may just be dense, but the article seems to be mostly focused on the notation of polyrhythms and how to transcribe them.
Still a worthwhile read though, thanks! |

A polorhythm is basically two different rhytmic sub-groupings imposed over each other. The simplest is 2:3 polrhytm, that is 2 beats 3.
Try this.
With your foot, tap "quarter" notes, just a slow steady beat. Now with your left hand, tap 8th notes over that single beat, that is for every tap of the heal you tap your left hand twice.
Now with your right hand tap 8th note triplets, that is for every tap of the heal, you're tapping your right hand 3 times.
Now your right hand and left hand are tapping 3 over 2, which is a polorhythm.
Note: If you're not a drummer, the co-ordination might be a bit hard, so try throwing it into a sampler or something to get the same idea.
Other polorhythms indlude:
3:4
5:4
7:2
Etc. |
