try a memory benchmark your system
sis soft sandra or everest are bench softwares for PC
there must be one for OSx

1x256mbs (333 i think)in a 2.1 Atlhoon XP
and it's known to top intels w/ 1Gb...
but i'm upgrading soon...

with all your audio softwares running and the computer on heavy load, did u check how much ram they use?.. i just don't think so much ram is needed...
