So, im in the midlle off learning all the basics of produciton. Im making my own sounds and arranging tracks. But, it is all very timeconsuming and im very anal about things. I tend to get stuck twaking all the sounds beeing used and trying to make them fit. Also, the sounds that i make doesnt to often come out the way i want, so i bang my head against the wall and spend lots of time trying to get it right. I also always come to a point where i give up the projects, because they dont turn out the way i want or i cant find that one right sound im after. It puts me off! Any advice from u experienced synth tweakers? I mean, music is my passion, but i sometimes get so overwhelmed by the complexities of everything. There are som many components involved in making electronic music. Also, i dont have many people that i can learn from in person, so i use the net for what its worth and also some online tuition. But its frustrating to have so much passion and motivation, butwhen i sit down i often get stuck on the small things and sit tweeking for hours. ok, so thats me spilling my guts. To end it off, i also have LOADS of fun and many aha moments. Love the forum, keep it up guys!

Hi Magus

I'm in the exact same boat as you by the sounds of things. I have recently tried a different approach were now I have 3 loops/projects going at once. This means that when I find myself getting stuck or banging my head against a brick wall with one project I can take a break and then switch to one of my other projects, to work on something different....I find this helps allot

I still find everything very time consuming as I am very slow at writing a tune...infact the tunes I have finished have taken me months to do and even then I still don't think they are good enough to present to anyones ears but my own or close friends.....but i do notice improvements every time i do something new. I find it really hard to soak up the masses of info out there on the subject of music production.....i guess it all comes down to time spent and the hope that we will get quicker in our efforts.

look forward to chatting to you some more sometime.

Thanx for your contribution. It helps to know that there are more out there facing the same obstacles as i am. What i think ill do is to just go ahead with creating basic loops; kick, bass, hats, snare, some lead and try to just go along from there. I tend to make things harder than they really are. instead of focusing on the little details, i believe i can learn so much more effecient if i just keep it basic and get on with my project.

Also, I think ill do also what u advice. If stuck, ill start a new project and switch back and forth. Also, im fully aware that this IS a time consuming task. I try to fit as much time as i can between work, excercise and meditation as possible. I read alot on the net, some times i feel to much. I get sensory overload. There are a lot of good tutorials out there, and some not quite so good. I just recently bought Cosmosis bass secrets that really helped me out. JUst by seeing how he works really helped me to see more clearly what the parameters on the instruments does. Anyway, here i go rambling again.

I would really like to hear how u guys learned to tweek your instruments. I know that it requires dedication and time, and ive done good in that department lately. But, i fail to see the big picture and how everything is working together. I know how a filter work and how its modulated by various modulators, but i must admit that i dont know what weapon to turn to for achieving wanted effects and results. Norway out...

work, work, work on your production.
the more you do it, the easier the things get.
you unlock more and more stuff along the way.
don't worry if you don't sound like everyone else...
that's good.

yes, the passion... the lost key!
there's some tracks where you can really feel it.
nowadays there's lots of music with no passion at all.

All artists have 'inspiration blocks', the more time you put in music, the more you'll feel them. You just have to have a variety of things to do, so you don't get stuck in a mental loop.

inspiration in beginning is most of all coming from your (advancing in) music. getting inspiration from external sources with music that is not kind of ok (quality and composition-wise, according to your own standards) is not working.

your sound has to stand first a bit to be able to use it as source of inspiration.

what i see as most important is to develop the right ears. this takes training. listen to tracks of others. try to recreate what you like. focus on one department and spend time exploring it.

check out the videos about psytrance-production (the payed one), andi vax mixing, other you-tubes. dont just browse the internet, copy what they do in the video in your sequencer simultaniously. with proper use of the information and focussed search on the internet you learn very fast these days.

if you have the possibility to invite someone in your studio that is pro in psy all the better. pay the guy some money for some lessons about basics (k-b, drums, leads).

there you go. enjoy.

That!

There is always something new to learn, but well yeah most of us that even learned the basis of music itself along with production (i didn't have a clue about fucking chords or scales) went through that particular stage.

My advice: learn synthesis.

Learn about what is sound, how sound is produced, what is an oscillator, how ADSR work, modulations etc...

That will help you know what to tweak in order to obtain that sound in your head. You will know if you have to lower that octave, boost the overdrive or delicately turn decay knob.

Also read your favourite synths' manual and post a lot of "how do i make this sound" threads XD

Well, it worked for me.

Persistence is the key, just like when u learn riding a bike but with a lot of knobs xD
