Your tutorial is very god , kicks can be also done by simple synthesis instead of FM ., vb-1 with good EQ and distortion can do wonders but still too much used, i'm now using audiorealism bassline (TB-303 clone) and... im more than satisfied, most things need EQ in order to separate frequencies so dont expect a killer sound at first

I recommend you steal your kicks and focus your energy on the inspirational part of the music, the melody and harmony.

for the kick i'm using the ES-1 resokick in logic, and for the bass i'm using a sampler, compress both and. i'm using 2 seperate mono chanels one for the rigth and one for the left. and then fx send the kick to output 1-2 and the bass on output 3-4, and the rest of the track on 5-6, use it or not, that's how i do. i think it's the best way for me

Happy Newyear everyone

Psy,

One other trick that helped me a lot:

Have your kicks end on the same frequency as the key of your bassline. If your bassline is in the key of 'D', make sure that your kick wave ends with a chunk of wave that is 36.71Hz (frequency of D - http://www.phy.mtu.edu/~suits/notefreqs.html ).

To do this, just use something like simple synthesis in Soundforge to create a sine wave at 36.71Hz, then copy and paste a bit of it on the end of your kick wave.

You'll have to make sure that you keep the kick short enough, and that you do any pasting right where the wave comes back to 0 so the wave stays nice and smooth.

When I do this I usually look at my kick waveform at the same time as a D1 (36.71Hz) waveform. I pick where it's just about the same (the kick is usually pitching down, sweeping past D1, but we're going to plop a pure D1 wave in there so it sweeps down and then plateau's at D1). Copy a bit of your D1 wave, find a nice crosspoint (where the wave hits 0) in the kick, and delete the rest of the kick wave. Then paste the D1 wave in there. It should look about the same as before, with the difference that the kick now 'doofs' down to D1, the key of your bassline, and stops.

Now when you do your bassline, EQ everything below D2 (73.42Hz) and let the kick form the fundamental. They will sit *very* nicely together.

Obviously if the key of your bassline is C, you'd be working with a C wave, if it was an A, then with an A wave, etc.

PM me if this doesn't make sense as I haven't really figured out how to explain this without screenshots.

Your sample sounds good, though the bass sounds a little low/muddy. Are you cutting off any of the low frequencies?

how do you cut off frequencies exactly? could anyone explain to me how i would do it using a parametric eq in fruity loops or using the eq in the mixer in cubase? thanks           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

Psycho, here is a very good tutorial on Equalization.

http://www.ethanwiner.com/equalizers.html

Basically you will use an EQ tool, such as the four-point EQ in cubase to cut specific frequencies. In this way you can layer many sounds and still be able to hear them all.

Imagine your track is a blank canvas, and your sounds are colors. You only have so much space to 'fill' with colors, and if you layer them all in the same spot you'll be left with brown mud. EQing is like moving the colors to different spots on the canvas, making sure that your blues don't overlap your yellows and turn them into green.

EQing is also like carving a statue, where you 'cut' away stone to reveal the statue below. In this way you also cut away frequencies that you don't want to reveal the sound that you want.

There are three types of EQ techniques you should familiarize yourself with: notch, low-pass, and highpass.

A notch boosts/cuts a specific frequency, with a varying amount of precision. It allows you to cut a very specific frequency, or to cut a range of frequencies.

A low-pass EQ cuts off all high frequencies above a certain point. So if your low-pass EQ is set to 50Hz, it will cut everything *above* 50Hz.

A high-pass EQ cuts off all low frequencies below a certain point, so if the point is 50Hz the high-pass EQ will cut everything *below* 50Hz.

The link above will explain all of these concepts in more depth.

Hope that helps,

-Alex

this link should help you understand the "canvas" thing fuzzikitten mentions:

btw, alex nice post about replacing the kicks ending wave with a sine "keyed" to the bass. i have heard of that before, but i couldn't understand how to do it until i read your post!           .

aha, that was the very article I was thinking of!

Thanks, I couldn't find it and was trying my best to remember it.

psycho, that article should explain much better than I what EQing is.

np, i always keep my bookmarks handy

i also just remembered, i use the notes' frequencies when creating a kick (the "infected" way), in order to keep it in key with the bassline. for example if my bass is "C" keyed, i start with a sine wave of 130.81 Hz (frequency of C3). the pitch bend will then have to be in the range of +-12 semitones (or +-24 semitones) if you are using soundforge.

i thought that was the way to keep my kick "in key" with the bass.           .
