I want to start making some deco in Lycra, but what is the best way to cut the fabrics?

Do you use scizzors og knife?

Do you stretch it before you cut?

Any tips is very appreciated.           -Explore the rabbithole-

Hi there--

I'm by no means an expert, but here's what I've done that seems to work pretty well.

First off, get yourself some very sharp long scissors. I've found the easiest way to cut the stuff is to have a friend hold one end, you hold the other and cut, keeping the material fairly taut. If your scissors are sharp enough, they should cut right through the lycra without you having to open and close the blades.

You'll need to figure out a way to attach wire to the spandex, so a good trick is to poke a bead through the spandex, then wrap it with wire (like for hanging pictures). I've found when stretching the spandex it works best if you go little bit by little bit, and I've found it really helps to think out where you are going to attach the wire coming off your lycra before getting started. Think in terms of X,Y, and Z axis.

here's some pics of lycra deco I've done at a few parties here--

Just experiment and have fun with it-- my next plan is to go nuts with concentric circles or some other airbrushed design on spandex prior to stretching it...

Good luck!           Punch You In The Eye

so do you have to reinforce the edges of the spandex after you cut it or is it pretty strong, as in it won't shred apart? how about the holes where you attach the wire? how close can they be to the edges before it rips through?

no no no--

don't poke the wire through the spandex or it will rip out--

Use a bead-- wrap the lycra around the bead, then twist wire around the bead to hold it in place.

Think of it like this-- take a napkin, put a ball in the center of the napkin, pick up the corners, then twist wire around the ball on the outside of the napkin...

The edges of the spandex will be okay after you cut, just be careful to make a good smooth cut. If it is all jagged it won't look good.
