I bought recently a HP dv9000 series laptop. I have it for a while, works perfectly (typing from it right now), never crash on windows or linux.

There are some points I suggest you should take into consideration:

- If you want to play a Live Act using this laptop, be aware that these 17' laptops are much less portable (more wait, bigger size) than the 15' or smaller.

- I changed from Vista (which came installed) to XP, cause Vista sucks. HP do not provide any kind of support and your warranty will be void if you install any other operational system (including a dual both with linux).
Anyways, I managed to make everything work, using some drivers provided to other models (found on HP homepage), an alternative nVidia driver and some other stuff.
On linux (Slackware 12) most of the stuff was detected, I compiled some other stuff and recompiled the kernel, but I still had not time to handle wireless and maybe something with the webcam.

I recommend you to buy the machine with 2 GB ram and also with the higher resolution screen (17.0" WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)). One of the reasons of buying a 17' notebook is that you can have higher resolutions, so I suggest you pick the model with 1680 x 1050 if you like it and think will use it (think about it: Isratrance on two browsers simultaneously on the screen ).

Respect!

alot more free vsts....

free (pirated) anything (at least easier then for mac...sometimes too hard to find a valid mac version of some softs on the net)

then again you could buy a intel mac and install windows xp on it...

iono...for graphics work (photoshop, 3d stuff) i addmit that a mac still superior then windows....but for music, i see no difference at all...just alot less compatibility with stuff on internet

depends on the budget and what are his plans with his laptop...the macs do have style...but there are some laps out there that really got some funky stuff going on...

check out that 12" hp with touchscreen and turnable screen to closed it with screen outside..

plus those panasonic thoughbooks...also touchscreen, and you can trow it out the window if you want....and have hope that it survived...

and those are all budget friendly... (the hp i think is $900 on ebay, new)you can always get a sexy biatch like a alienware or others top notch lappies...all good           un-fucking-believable

I know that the lasts core duo and core 2 duo pc laps are good as macs for music...

But and the stability? Im bored with my toshiba box stucking.....

I would think mac cause its OS, and not hardware at all, as the macs come to intel processor...

sure, a mac is more trustable, for a begginer or if you dont want to have any worries with the machine...

but if you know your way around windows...and what causes what, and you manage to keep it clean, and maintain it properly...it will do just fine...

well, in the end...if i did change my laptop for a mac, i would surelly bootcamp windows on it...the advantages are many, plus i think someone said that doing that you reach the best performance possible for live for example...           un-fucking-believable

A lot of people buy a mac and boot windows on it. It makes me think of why you pay so much more for a mac just to boot windows on it. Food for thought I guess.

I think that my option to go with this HP is going to be a solid one. Thank you so much for all of your info. Keep the advice goa-in if ya got anymore to add.

It's good mate. I own an dv9542ev, removed vista ofcourse, and installed XP. It runs like the wind. Solid finishing, nice big screen, it looks and feels like a quality choice. You may have some trouble installing XP on these machines though, (drivers and installation is a pain in the ass) so pay a visit to

If and when you buy this laptop you will surely appreciate this link (atleast I did). You are going to install XP in the end, when you realize that you can have double speed with your software. Keep the Vista experience for your desktop, or maybe create a dual-boot to see for yourself.

@full_on : You only lose the software support, because XP is not supported. Your hardware is remaining under guarantee. You can install anything you want on your hardware.

Are you really sure about this? I'm pretty sure that HP can't really remove the warranty on hardware because of the OS you choose to install. They may suggest a OS, and they may also supply an OEM version of windows with the machine, but they can never require that you run it. Then they might aswell say that you can't connect USB hardware to the machine either since breaking the computer is more likely by adding hardware, than by running software.

They may not do support on windows, which is understandeble since it should be microsoft that handles windows problems, but they can NEVER remove your hardware warranty because of programs you have running on your machine... I'm pretty sure that is illegal in most countries.

On topic: I've used a HP laptop for the last 2-3 years and it has not crashed for me once. The only time I've had problems was when connecting some USB stuff, but that is more likely to be due to some problems with drivers. I'm running XP on it and have no plans of upgrading it at the moment.

Just ordered a new HP with nearly the same specs as the one in the OP thread (think mine is with the t7500 cpu instad though) and is looking forward to getting it. I think I will install Vista on it, if I can get drivers for my soundcard for it.

btw...for all you vista hatters out there...

there has been updates released, and more updates to come....performance wise i red that the recent update was quite good, this guy said he noticed a improvement on Live, the cpu weight which was quite heavy turned down to almost the same as a xp based Live...

so i guess, an XP is to be considered now, but in a near future, Vista will start sounding more appealing...and the tendency is of XP beeing put a side, like we did to widows 98, and 95 before that)

come to think of it....the only real huge jump microsoft did, upgrading from one plataform to the other, even interface wise, was 3.1 up to win95, now that was a huge upgrade...

still remember the days of win 95 (plus!), playing Full throotle with a wooping 32mb ram (and that was ALOT)

anyway...           un-fucking-believable

used to play Full throotle too.. =)

good times...

Im not sure about my next notebook after reading all u guys saying that mac is too expensive for the final result...

Lets see... I will need a machine, but more, a game machine... I play many games, and I sold my desktop... I need to get a notebook with gameplay capability.

Macbook pro give me: nVidia 8600 GT, DVi port...
for $1999

A similar machine will give me, nVidia 7600 Go, and very close configuration for about $1799 (alienware)

I tryed to find some HP with these settings but not close to alienware, for $1150

I use LIVE and some good commercial VSTs... Could I change to MAC ? I know that all my games have mac ports...

And now ? go for HP? go for alienware? or go for MAC and give OSX a try?

Thanks guys.

doesnt need to be an alienware...

any laptop with dedicated graphics (i see alot of them nowadays, specially when you make the laptop from order (pick every spec)....if i wanted to upgrade nowadays (i also use the notebook for games, heavy 3d games, my actual laptop is a turin 64x2 1.6gh with 2gb of ram with 256mb shared to the graphics (ATI 1100) and it runs all good (with a few tweaking =p ) winning eleven, stalker....even oblivion (the latest one)) i would go for the cheapest model itself, and pick best parts...like 2.2 (or even 2.4) gh core 2 duo, 2gb ram, and 256mb dedicated graphics...i tried that on the dell and lenovo (both with REALLLLLY good prices right now) the cheapest model..with the best parts...and i managed with a budget of 1100-1200USD to build a machine stronger even then a 2000USD mac pro....

the pros of the mac, and that makes it a edge superior, would be the new screens (longer battery, better quality, backlit lcd) and the highly upgradeable RAM (up to like 10gb, normal laptops you get max 2gb or 4gb most of the times...) plus the processor is different then the laptop line (santa barbara, some crap like that?)

btw....there is a new model of the mac pro comming out in january, with new intel processor (up to 2.8ghz)...prices should prolly drop for older models...maybe worth waiting =p

hum...

I think IŽd go for HP ones after visiting http://www.notebookreview.com

About $1000, with 256+mb Nvidia 7series dedicated
, 15' screen, 160+gb HD...

But no DVI port, no HDMI port...

Only MACs and Alienware have nVidia 8series...

But with the price difference, I will have a HP book + external soundcard + active monitors
