I've got some speed problems with Ableton Live 5.
When my cpu usage get's to 49% everything start freezing and going slowly (and the hard disk overload led light's up).
Before, I used to keep the synth voices to a low value and everything goes fine but now I started having serius problems.
Seems the only way to make it work fine is to render to disk every part of music and then rearrange it (this is a lot of work!).

My computer is a:
PowerBook G4 1.67Ghz
1GB Ram
80gb hdd

Ableton settings are:

Buffer size: 2048samples
Sample rate: 48000
Plug-in buffer: 8192
Clip-update rate: 1/2

in the song i use:
1 x Tau Pro 2
1 x Reaktor 5 (as sidechain comp)
2 x Vanguard
and some samples

please help me out since I'm really getting mad!           --

strange... the only advise i can give you is use another sidechain compressor. reaktor is hungry as nothing i think the lowest cpu sidechain you can get is the tc native bundle one.
i would tell you to format but it's not windows... i don't think osx is like windows that has to be formated twice a year.

yes, get some another compressor man, reaktor as a compressor?? this is too much powerful tool to use it only as a compressor
get some normal AU plugin, its good

and set sample rate to 44000, 48 is unstandart rate.

@adrenal-mode: Yes I think too that my computer is getting mad, and I'm getting mad with it..
Anyway I use the pc internal soundcard (but I have an Hercules Dj Console too and the problem is the same)

I will try another sidechain compressor but I can't find a free one for mac!

Thank you a lot! I tried the compressors, they wok but the aren't sidechain comp!

Anyway when ableton freezes how high is your cpu usage?

I guess there must be something to fix it because isn't a normal thing...would have more opinions from ableton users..

ahhh shit m8 i didn't saw you need sidechain comp... sorry...

about freezing it is a problem of ableton - it uses a lot of ram, i have 256, recommended is 512 so i am fighting with it =)
but you wrote you have 1gb of ram. this is strange if ableton is freezing on your configuration hmmm... i cant tell you much cause i dont see how it exactly going.
very strange situation really

What soundcard are you using and are you using the correct asio drivers for your it. Check this under the audio preferences.

Also if you have any audio files in there, make sure they arnt being timestretched. When you double click, the warp icon will be on if they are. This can slow down Live a great deal.

Check your disk cache also. I have mine set to 2GB. Also make sure your system drive and the drive ableton is installed on have atleast this much space available (preferrably more)

Your buffer sizes seem very large also. My plug in buffer is set to only 256!!

Also, you mentioned you had the voices on vanguard set low. Ideally set them to as low as possible, usually 3-4 for leads and maybe up them to 8 for pads and such?? Though i dont see why it should affect your performance that much.

Good luck, hope you sort it out man =)

@Sc!zOpHrEn!kZ: Thanks anyway, even if they aren't side-compressors they will be more usefoul than the ableton compressors

@axolotyl: As I said before I'm using the core audio.
Also my samples are all warped, I can turn them off but many are indispensable..

About the voices, they affect my cpu if the vanguard reverb is turned on.

I don't know where I can change the disk cache with a Mac but anyway I've got 4gb free on the drive and should be enough! (I guess )

Anyway I just discovered the "Freeze Track" option that will record a midi track as audio and the play it in realtime (freeing a lot of cpu from plugins & fx's)
