It's the time signature.
4/4 means that you have four beats in a measure, 3/4 means that you have three beats in a measure.

In musical speech, one is the quantity and the other is the quality of the rithm figure.

Rithm figures are allways rulled like this:
a four beats long figure, corresponds nș 1
a two beats long figure, corresponds nș 2
a one beat long figure, corresponds nș 4
a half beat long figure, corresponds nș 8
a quarter beat long figure, corresponds nș16
(see any similarity with sequencers? the 16ths are quarters of one beat, right?)

So basicaly the quality and quantity thing, means that for a 4/4 measure you need four figures (notes) of one beat long (nș4)

Hope this helps...

Hallucinogen - Snakey Shaker...

it starts with 4/4 - then becomes 6/4 and then 4/4 again. 6/4 does sound the same as 3/4 when talking about trance music. it's just 6 beats instead of 4.

6/8 and 3/4 is the same man...

just twice up the tempo (or half it down) and it's the same!

Oops.
I'm terribly sorry Ohmboy, I don't know what I took the night I wrote the last thread.
It makes a lot of sense, the idea; but never, if explained like this.

I've tried to help...

..not in the best way, ...sorry...
