I am planning on doing some live playing of some presets on various vstis during a live set I have coming up (it's downtempo so as exact as I'm gonna try to be, everything doesn't have to be dead on). I was wondering if anyone here has done this before and has some tips on parameters to tweak that are fun or anything else they've stumbled upon that worked well. I'm gonna be using Ableton live and will have this 49 key keyboard (http://www.akaipro.com/mpk49) at my disposal.

Basically I want to gather some ideas of some things to try that I may have not though of already. Thanks!           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

cutoff+resonance ; delay / reverb time , envelope , some stuff in mod matrix like lfo on pitch(vibrato) or cutoff , or lfo on volume to get tremolo..something like that should always work ..playing an arp should be even more fun if you worked out a good one..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

I'm not sure how that keyboard works but I assume that using its native software to assign controllers, you should be allowed to split the keyboard into different MIDI channels (ex. Octave 1 plays MIDI 1 and so on). If you have all your VSTI channels in Ableton armed with monitoring set on IN you should be able to fit 4 sounds along your keyboard range, so you can play all channels without switching MIDI channels on your keys.

If you set your channels up this way, you can assign one button on your controller to create a loop in one or more of your VSTI channels. Pushing this button again will end the loop according to your global quantize and the empty loop(s) will keep looping, and notes you play within these loops will be recorded and quantized according to whatever clip quantization you set for it in the control panel of ableton. Keyboard knobs you assign to parameters on the VSTi will also be recorded into the clip envelope section and will keep looping your last knob movement until you move the knob again.

Beyond that, Zork hit a lot of good parameters. One tip for a mod matrix (assuming your VSTi has one) is that if you have velocity sensitive drum pads, you can change the MIDI number of the pads (using the keyboard's software or whatever) to whatever CC sources your VSTi mod matrix lets you assign, thus creating velocity sensitive FX buttons which can be really cool also.

Wow..sounds interesting Axis..will try that loop stuff as well..

One thing to this specific keyboard it has an onboard arp function, did you check this one out? might be cool especialy combined with this live looping..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

Sweet, thanks for the tips guys! I like the one about having 4 MIDIs each on their own octave- hadn't thought about that one.

I'm actually picking that keyboard up next weekend so I'll have a few weeks to play around with it before my set.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

You can make some nice EQ presets on Ableton and link them to slider/reglers on Keybord so you can easily make nice sweep, low/high pass etc fx.... or put some dblue glich on master. You can link what ever you want           Never let computers to win a game! :)
