Hello everybody. I am in a tight situation here, and I wonder if you guys can help me:
We will throw a medium party, for 400, but the placeLs sound equipment fell to the ground, and we got f@#$%d. We canLt cancel the party so we need to play from a laptop. I need to know what kind of soft/hard-wares we need to make the connection from the laptop to the sound system (the CDJs/mixers are what were broken). Owh, we already have the Traktor installed and are able to make it work. Err, no Einsteins among us here, so
please try not to use technical words.
Thanks a lot. |

one way or another u need a mixer. u dont need cds if u have laptop and traktor but u need a mixer to connect the amps to it.
u can connect them to the soundcard directly but i would not suggest it cos of the akward volume control.. its better to have a nice master volume knob/fader

I'm sorry to hear that...
But orange is right. You need a mixer. It's not necessary, you can do the job just with the pc but even to mix with traktor s mixer is very helpful.
Don't forget, since it's a laptop you might only have one cd player, so you cant play from one cd to another. I recommend you copy each file from the cd to the pc and play it from the pc..
If you can get a midi controller, it would help a lot too..
Can't you rent a pair of CD J ? It shouldn't be much expensive..

what kind of sound interface are u using????
do you have a midi controller??
what software are u using for dj set or live set.
if u have a audio interface with at least 4 outputs / 2 stereo, u can use traktor internal mixer, and use the second output for monitoring in headphones and even better if u have hardware midi control so u can have faders not only for the master but for each deck as well as for the eq kills and other filters etc.
i have done this with traktor, echo indigo dj and oxygen 8, plug directly into the amp , no problem. traktor even has a limiter on the master. i would dare to say it sounds even better because the sound is coming directly from the audio interface which i have set to 24 bit audio - needless to say better than any cd player, even better if u use original wavs....... that kicks ass. u just have to be very careful with the cables - adapters needed to effectevely connect the master out of the soundcard , to the PA, thats always VERY important. |

for live set is another setup story, but the hardware is basically the same. i use ableton live instead of traktor, also can control every parameter , faders knobs and route the outputs for master and prelisten. that assuming u are only using laptop with no external sound modules... i would even dare to say u can get a more powerful and clean sound as there is nothing in the way between ur soundcard and the PA, u just have to setup everything right ... correct routing and also use some kind of limiter on the master output of the software traktor/ableton/whatever... i use good old Waves L2 |

Thank you guys above for all the hints. The easiest way would be us to rent a pair of CDJs - problem is that the broken ones (by one of our crew) WERE rented. We decided to play from the laptop cause it will save us a lot of money - we have to save to pay the club. As always, Japanese price: 10 thousand dollars for one night!
thank you, really. I had no idea we had to attach a mixer to the LT - at least we still have the mixer working.
Peace |

10.000$ to rent the club for one night?????? Holy S#&T
I'd say you are better off having your party in the woods... its a hell of a lot cheaper...

Well knocz, I donLt know how it is where you live. But Japan it the paradise for bureaucratics. I mean: lots of papers, licenses, guarantors, advance payments, insurances and all the complete set one can have nightmares with - even in the woods it would be expensive. And 10,000 bucks for a 400 people space is the normal price here. Space Cat and the Chemical Crew will play next month in club here, Zepp, who has a wonderful sound system. But guess how much is the rental fee? 30,000. No wonder one night ticket here is the same as the price of a festival somewhere else. My party? 50 dollars entrance, with no drinks attached.
Peace. |

Hello Goa Ganges, hope you still need tips, cos here i come!
well, i played using only laptops alot of times, its really fun! (not as with a live mixer + CDJs, but still, very fun , plus u can add your own touches using vst's, its a live dj set hehehe)
my advice to you is: (considering u already have the laptop and all the equipment blah blah)
1: get one of these: Traktor, Deckdance, Ableton, Mixmeister fusion.
2: upload all your songs into its playlist first and practice around with it.
3: give em hell!
so thats my tips, treat it as a cdj normal dj set, only played from a pc, its really fun and you'll enjoy it loads!
