since Israforum doesnt have POLLS im asking u guys straight what platform u use and WHY, likes/dislikes, advantages/dissadvantages
personally i use Synapse Orion 6 Platinum, just the reason that its User-Friendly (defenitely more than FL)
i like the way its opens the instruments and the way u can edit every note, and the way u open plugins is really smart
i dont like Orion for mixing and mastering, thats the bad side of it, i prefer more Acid Pro 4 (5 and 6 are nice too but 4 runs faster) and Cubase SX 2.2/3.1
ur turn...

its great to mix in, great to master in, great to arrange in, it has drumedit wich is a great tool. For more positive talk, i would have to copy paste the full list of functions available in cubase
Oh yeah, almost forgot, one of the most important things, the GUI is real nice. myspace.com/auralinvasion

im also a cubase guy and the reason is simply i love working in it! instruments and effects are working perfectly for me as well as automation and a bunch of other features i rather spend time learning more of it than goof around. it works for me! and im learning more very day. why should i start another thing if im not finished with this. the tool is fine, is me who needs to learn.
i think is the same with vst instruments, i used to think that if i had tons and tons of synths and fx i would become a better producer. now i use only the ones i think i have really mastered and that appeal to my sound and my way of working. ive learnt more about synthesis and creating my own patches, instead of just using presets. that was i doing when using all this vstis i didnt knew. now i just keep the ones that i know are going to give me the colors i want, and cubase is my perfect canvas!

i'm used to cubase too, but it was quite intimidating at first. What I really really hate about it is it's too damn rigid effect chain. I don't understand why you can't insert an effect between two existing effect if they don't have free slot between them! It's a pain in an ass to first save the presets for the open effects and then rearrange everything to make room for the new effect. And please don't tell me it's already possible - i would need to bang my head to the wall quite hard then Also the slicing tool is a bit akward to use (lack of experience mostly, but it's not the most userfriendly editor in the world).
I've tried orion, podium, reason and fl too. All of them have their strong and weak points. But cubase takes the lead because of it's general level of quality. Podium seems interesting too, I need to get more into it soon. |

well i use cubase 3 for music production and nuendo 3 for my work (TV and radio advertising). before i tried cubase i used acid 3, reason 1-3 and some other stuff, but when i first met the great product from Steinberg i just fell in love with it =) and when i started working as sound engenier in media broadcast sphere, there was no question for what sequensor to use - i just installed nuendo (the guy who worked there before me used samplitude). so both cubase and nuendo do the job excellent.

Why o why ? I think i use Cubase because i own a pc and i really enjoy making music with it (if i'd owned a mac i probably would have tried Logic). Besides Cubase i use Reason for some chores and at the moment i'm considering to start using Ableton Live for some jobs. I could have started using Sonar, but i didn't have enough time to delve into it.

I started with Cubase 3.1 on Atari something like 14 years ago. When Acid came out i turned to a PC(i would anyway) and was using both in combination(cubase for midi and arrangement, Acid for samples/drum and other loops), swapping from one to another(very very annoying!!!)
A few months before Acid 6.0 came out which has finally a descent midi section, in a way that you can record and edit midi in a cubase style.
Result : Cubase is dead for me. Acid 6.0 is the ONE.
Maybe i'll turn back to Cubase only if it becomes like Acid. Otherwise.......i'll never bother again with it. |

I have been using Logic (just upgraded to 7.2), and have used it on PC since 3.2, having switched over from 5.5 to Mac a few years ago.
all in all I have gotten used to its style, so without any flag waving, I can just say simply that its pretty flexible, but does have its quirks. just switching over platforms, from PC to Mac, then OS9 to OSX, and even the validation thing from L6 to L7 is probably more horror than most people should have to bear.. but, whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger...
from 3.1 I quickly got used to the fact that although the program (and computer programs in general) may be said to have certain features, they dont always work, there ARE bugs, and you have to find workarounds, like try thinking that Logic Audio on a 133mhz PC could really run audio and effects and stuff!
I've dabbled around in Cubase a little bit, and even thought about changing over a few times (read frustration). While i thought it was a pretty tight program, didnt like the way it handled MIDI in the arrange window. that being said, i know alot of people use it with great success, so it must be adaptable to an efficient working style.
i guess this is just a matter of having gotten used to a certain way of doing things. for me I was never an audio person, prefering to do things in MIDI - because I often get an idea and want to change something later which can be really frustrating if all of your tracks are rendered in audio (almost impossible!).
>>Drunken Monk
about Logic for PC compared to Mac. its not bad overall for PC, especially in a mostly hardware setup with MIDI, but you have to consided the version difference. if you are running alot of Audio then 7 is almost necessary. just alone plug in delay compensation on the bus is a neceessary feature, and when opening a L6 song into L7, and enabling the delay compensation, i could literally hear the song snap into sync. not having this before, no wonder alot of my stuff was sounding like crap. how they didnt think of including such an important thing from the start is one of the areas that Logics developers are skilled in causing me frustration.
that being said though, with the added functionality and stability of OSX, and some of the editing features like instert and cut time, I am pretty happy and have developed my own style of working that suits me. still crashes sometimes. there are still some problems, and you will see me voicing frustration from time to time on the apple forum, but it is getting to be better and better, and at the same time, i think i am getting more efficient at working with it
in the end it is just whatever tool you can use to get the results you want in the most efficient way. it is fun discussing the differences between software though... and it is these differences that ensure better products in the future
