Level Djs & Club A (São Paulo / Brazil): Anything Goes

Level Djs, a brazilian booking agency, and Club A, which is a club based in Sao Paulo altogether, have always been known in the brazilian scene for their partnership as well as for their somewhat weird business practices, which usually mirror a gooffy behaviour, but sometimes are a sad display of disrespect towards the artists and the public.

TRIPTYCH had been booked to perform at CLUB A on Saturday, March 05. The organizer promoted such event with widespread publicity, advertsing it over several Internet sites, and in electronic billboards over the main streets of São Paulo, taking full advantage of TRIPTYCH’s name & reputation to attract as much public as possible.

Which effectively happenned, for CLUB A was overcrowded with more than 2.000 ppl attending that evening. Then, at a short notice, , CLUB A & LEVEL DJs (which supposedly should represent the artist’s interests), just a few minutes before its scheduled performance, informed TRIPTYCH that its set/live act was cancelled, and was given no plausible explanations for such a decision. And to make things worse, the organizer refused to pay any amount out of the artist’s fee.

The performance was then postponed to the following Wednesday, March 10. And again, the SAME situation repeated itself: Intense advertising & promotion, and the act/set was again cancelled ON THE SPOT, meaning that the attending public only learned about it inside CLUB A, having been given no prior warning.

Beto RL, a dj and frind of Charles (Triptych) had a conversation over MSN afterwards, which can be seen at

The above should act as a warning to all djs & projects which are planning a trip to Brazil, and in doing such, are to be represented by Level Djs and are to play at CLUB A. Do the right thing, and the right thing is not just to have a written contract, for most of the times it means nothing, as the brazilian law is slow and cumbersome, and many artists come inside Brazil with tourist visas, which prevent them from legally working in any capacity.

Instead of relying ONLY upon contract, DO DEMAND a down payment of at least 50% of the due fee before living your country. And if already in Brazil, apply the same procedure before allowing your name / project name to be advertised over the organizer’s publicity material.

Yes this is true. I was talking to Charles according to what EB wrote. So be aware of your actions.

Peace,
