Is anybody thinking of placing sounds in the space of your mix ?
I meen not only using panning to place right-left and make louder to make the sound "closer".
I meen, for example, if the sound is placed right, it has a little delay between right and left channel; if sound is closer, it has less reverb and more low and high freqs, etc. etc..

When i mix, i mainly use "believe your ears" algorythm, but i think that logical thinking of all this stuff could give great results when used with knowledge.

Maybe someone can advice some tracks where such things are made and used, or share your experience...

All that stuff is always used by good sound-engineers when recording live music, but i'm not absolutely sure how to manage with it in electronic music, where sounds and spaces dont have natural analogs...

any thoughts on that?=)           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

Well, I watched David Gibson's hillarious and educational 'The Art of Mixing' tape
(http://thelowendtheory.blogspot.com/2005/06/psychedelic-mixing-david-gibson.html)
and you're supposed to imagine the stereo field as a 'box' in front of you, hard pan left and right are the limits, and a lower volume equates to a distance further away from you. We all mix with our ears rather than voltage or dB readings because there is 'apparent' volume. ie - (As David put it) if a chainsaw and a flute were played at the same dB, the chainsaw would be apparently louder.

I mixed like this anyway, but he just confirmed it.

Its all about volume, panning, reverb, and some filtering might help also...

The Reverb predelay will tell you how close or distant an intrument is, small pre-delay for distant sounds (smaller diference between source and reflected) , larger pre-delay for close sounds (source comes before and reflected takes more time)

I liked David Gibsons video as well, most notably David's hairdo and the weird jokes. Also check Steinbergs Internal Mixing DVD's i found that they give a lot of info on how to plan a mix, in space, frequency, time and so on.
