Placing bass notes over the kick or not?

I did try it ... but there's another way that suites me better in the track that i am doing now...
Two layers of bass, same instrument but one runing the normal eq that i allways do for a bass instrument and NOT PLAYING on top of the kick.
The other layer i have cut the bottom end to around 600 HZ and boost the cut off off that instrument and play an extra note on top of the kick.
Like that i can play a bass note on top of the kick without messing up the frequencies of both instruments, i could cut the high frequencies of the first layer though ...
My question is, should i side chain the second layer to the kick as well?...
