Long raising lines... i usually render a single synthline then use Cubase pitch shift to make it rise but what if i don't want to render?
I have been trying a couple of synths but pitchmod envelope attack on them is not long enough for the task, i need it to be longer.
Automating osc's pitch is not a good idea either because you can hear it rising semitones and not a continuous tone... also an lfo is not 'low' enough for several bar uplift...
Maybe i'm using the wrong synth or method... any idea? |

Most of the synths have pitchbend wheels. (usually located at the left side of the keyboard)
They are usually set to pitch the tone for a few notes, but you can edit that so that the wheel pitchbends for, let say, 5 octaves.
Try automating that and you won't get stepping, like when you automate osc's pitch.
Cheers

I thought pitchwheel could only be recorded as midi data and sometimes it can be a pain in the ass to edit that (pitchwheel, aftertouch) in cubase... but gonna try to automate it as well.
thanks |

Did you try to play with portamento or glide?

if you want seamless increasement of the sound i think maybe pitchshifting it on the audio file is the best?
of course you can use portamento and glide to some extent... it depends on how far you want to glide it...
hmm, im puzzled

You can pitch bend as far as you like with portamento, no limits. For a long riser though it can be difficult to get it exactly the way you want, cos you have to listen to it from the very beginning the whole way through every time you tweak it.
Another method is to set pitch bend range to +-12 semitones and transpose the synth line by octaves when you run out pitch bend.
For example say you have a synth line you want to rise by 4 octaves over 16 bars. Over the first 8 bars of your synth line put a pitch bend going from -8191 to 8192 (ie. down as far as possible -> up as far as possible), then do the same with the second 8 bars. Make sure you have quantise turned off when you do this as you want as much resolution as possible. You'll have two rising ramps in the pitch bend lane, each 8 bars long. Transpose the first 8 bars of your line +1 octave (so the first downwards part of the pitch bend keeps it at the octave you want) and the second 8 bars +3 octaves (so the second downward part of the pitch bend makes the pitch the same as the end of the first upwards part).
It's a bit complicated to explain but I hope this helps
