Well guys, this must be the final blow to buying CDs. Pioneer has just launched in Japan an improved version of the 100s CDJ, and it can read MP3 discs.

A lot of CDJ’s (some Numark, Denon etc) have been able to read mp3’s up till now – I don’t think the CDJ200 will change much.

That being said, the CDJ200 looks intriguing though – especially the 0.02% precision

Well, I played on them once and while they worked sufficiently well, I didn't like the feel of it compared with the CDJ 100.

Here are my gripes:
The <PLAY> button doesn't give, so you don't know by feel if you really pressed it or not - have to look on the display to make sure. The jog wheel feels really flimsy and cheap, and the pitch control while very precise, is rather hard to set +- .05, let alone .02. Just not tight enough, the way turntable pitch shifter is. Until they improve those areas, I'll stick with the proven CD players like CDJ 100 or CDJ 800.

Besides, I don't know if you can pitch shift MP3s - I didn't try. I think you can do it on the Denons, but not the Numarks. Though I may be wrong.

2 cents

I bought two when they came out... yes, there are some problems with the model - the pitch shifting is stick when you get down to fine tuning (kinda annoying) and the jog wheel is a little flimsy... all that aside, I do enjoy them for the extra pitch resolution - that's the thing I hated the most on the 100s.

They do play MP3s but who cares? Burn it to CD, you lazy skag. Anyway, you can pitch them as long as they aren't VBR. Though I have hundreds of MP3 CDs lying around from these long years of collecting, I don't foresee an occasion where I'd actually make use of one...

Have you tried it ? And why is it much better ?

What do you think about the bad things the others mention ?

basically the only main difference from the 100's is that you can make a loop...

It seems like they overcompensated on the start time for people that don't know how to properly set their cue points... when I played on these it seemed like they skipped ahead when I pressed play. I found instead of being a little behind the beat when I started mixing (the norm with 100s) I was always ahead of the beat at had to back up with these 200's.

And yes, as mentioned the pitch slider was a little iffy. Always on a .05 number.           http://soundcloud.com/aeon604

I dunno, I have used these things a couple of times and really had no issue with them... The pitch slider worked well for me and the jog wheel wasn't an issue. I usually have a feather light touch anyway, so it didn't bother me in the least bit. As for the start time issue that Aeon raised, it didn't seem any different from the 100's for me... Personally, I still love my cmx 3000s, but if I didn't have those, I would be using those cdj 200s. I like them a hell of a lot better than the 1000s.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
