hello dear chillers
im into chillout for not that long time but i feel like i have always loved this music its just that now i realise it to its full extend.
I would like a piece of advice from you which is about a friend of mine.
He is also from Bulgaria and he has a great desire to make ambient music but he doesnt have the technical possibility for that. His pc is quite old and he doesnt have anything different from FL5. Since the bulgarian folklore is very unique and unrepeatable i think a whole new genre of chillout music can be made but our chillout scene in bulgaria is very weak. we have the nature(mountains, plains, sea) and we have the traditional instruments which i havent heard in even one track up to now but which i want to hear because im sure it will sound very unique. the guy im talking about is very interested on this and if he has the opportunity he would contribute to the scene by creating some ambient with elements and instrumentzs from the bulgarian folklore its just that he doesnt have a studio.
if any of you can give us a hint or a piece of advice how to start something with minimal costs or just give an example of how other artists started i would really appreciate it.
thank you in advance |

Indeed !
I remember when I was much younger a breathtaking CD titled "Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares" (the Mystery of Bulgarian Voices) owned by a friend's mother and we were sometimes listening to it !
In these days (1996) there was a Techno track we had on a Edy-E mixtape (german Dj) I never heard elsewhere (sadly) using a long passage of this CD.. And If I'm not mistaken, the teaser of the movie The Beach was also using something from it.
So yes, Chilled beats with such vocals could be really really interesting !
Go for it !
But about technical advice I'm not the best person for it sorry..

First, tell him to read a lot the "Equipment and Music Creation" section of Israforum. There are a lot of hints and tips about the basics of music production ( this is the ultimate post, ever: http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/7700/forum/2 ), as well as some info anda tips on fruit loops. Actually, Fruit Loops is a pretty nice software forbeginners, very capable and also hosts VSTs, wich is nice. Speaking of VSTs, he should search for as many as he can.
Also, he should search for some info on synthetizers programming, something pretty essencial for any kind of eletronic music. The net is plenty of these, but i consider the "How to make a Noise" book pretty essencial. HE can download it @ www.noisesculpture.com
Well, that`s a lot of information. Production takes time (and i`m not talking about months..) you know.
I would invest in a nice PC. In case his PC can handle the songs in fruity, one good thing to buy would be a Midi controller/keyboard with built-in Audio Interface such as M-Audio Ozone. They are realetivelly cheap, and with the built-in soundcard he can sample any instrumeents he want, plug a guitar or bass or mic in the Ozone and throw those sounds inside the computer. Also, those keyboards have all the knobs/pitch control/modulation control he needs to go crazy with the virtual synths and stuff...
go for it. |

good idea indeed
there has been some usage of balkan music tradition in electronic music but certainly not enough. as kako-man already said the
singing style is very hypnotizing and unique. (one of my alltime faves is union jack's two full moons and a trout casper pound rmx with a long sample of a bulgarian female choir singing/chanting. still gives me goose bumps every time i listen to it.)
back to your question... if you don't have the money to set up a studio then you should collaborate with somebody else who already has some equipment available and start saving money to buy your own. it's not that expensive anymore (if you compare 2006 to 1996 there's a huge difference money wise) all you need is a good computer, soundcard and a microphone and you're on your way already...
good luck!
