I dabble in video editing... It's just as enjoyable as music production, but from a different perspective, although the workflow is quite similar.
What's even better is editing psy videos, then you can really play with sound and visuals.

Blur/smudge = reverb/delay/distortion, sharpen = compression/EQ

I think distortion would have more to do with an image matrixing..so maybe that translates visually to stretching an image or something or something..just lowering the quality of it.
I think Grainstates in Reaktor has something of a "smudge" effect to it..
I'd have to say reverb for blurring and either compression or high end exciting for sharpening..hmmm
