great explanation indeed, but I have one question regarding exactly sylenth. I never managed to turn the phase exactly at 90 degrees. it always get to some inexact values, as 90,83 or 89,70 or something similar. Is there some trick to turn it Exactly at 90? some shortcut, some key... I've tried ctrl, alt, etc... didn't manage and i couldn't write it down neither as in other synths it is possible just to write the exact value...

Colin, great info on nearly everything, but your explanation of Sawtooths is not right at all - you are not going through 0!
90 degrees starting shift, whether the waveform is oriented to originally start at the 0 or 180 degree point on the synth, results in half dB of maximum waveform volume on a mathematically perfect sawtooth.

all i know is that fuking around with the phase on my synth can give me a very nice click.. along with a transient modulator and compression makes this even better sounding - but it all started with where i started within the wavform. ,, cheers again to everyone who anwserd clearly.

I never used that synth but on others I'd find that if I start turning the knob with the mouse and move the arrow as far away from the knob as possible, I can "turn" the knob much more slowly becuase the arrow is so far away and achieve intended values.

Quite right, thanks for that. I was visualising a unipolar ramp waveform, not a bipolar sawtooth.
So... if you're adjusting start phase on a sawtooth wave, you'll get big positive-going click at 0, a big negative-going click at 359, and no click (as such)at 180 since this is where the waveform passes through the zero line.

Xactly,
unless your a lazy pig like me, who builds his oscs so that their 0 phase position is where the one you describe would be at 180, because it is a lot easier to chop up a waveform there in a wave editor , which is not untypical in synths, and would follow exactly what you say, but 180 degrees out.
Same difference, and just goes to show how dificult it is to really be precise in any way about where to turn that phase knob to. The only thing really, is do turn it!
