PHACELIFT- PATH OF PATHOS (CDCF07)

“Path of Pathos" tracklisting :

1. Path of Pathos
2. Re-Order
3. The new U
4. The Yippie Hippy Shake
5. Synaesthesia
6. Delay Lama
7. Animalism
8. Red Bass
9. True Love

With his album "Path of Pathos" Phacelift aka Kostas Alekoglou presents nine tracks of a progressive and minimal type, stylistically varying from morning sound to techhouse and trance.

A large portion of grooving beats with a light breeze of monotony create an atmospheric deepness with completely own character. Discreet melodies and precisely but cautious used samples transform to creatures with color pencils in their hands that turn your visions into pictures.

Without exception the tracks are persuasive and don't spare with steady new motivation boosts, always placed at the right position. At anytime you're aware of Kostas' experience he gained with other projects and he uses it to create worlds to dive into with his homogenous and smooth sound. Close your eyes and step into it.

Kostas Alekoglou, formerly known as half of Magus, is going solo after splitting from his ex partner quite a long time ago.
Phacelift is heavily influenced by the techno scene, and we can hear this influence with this dark progressive album.
Phacelift starts with a groovy progressive track, more morning orientated. The music style evolves little by little, and by the third track it is already becoming dark nocturnal music. The baseline is impressive, hard and pumping – very X-Dreamish in a way.
The sounds gets more and more buzzing, demanding, and during the whole time surrounded by a massive night atmosphere. The music softens at the 7th track, with some tribal, groove and even pop aspects.
The samples are funny, different than the usual drug related sample you hear in trance.

Very recommended album, especially for those who thought psychedelic night progressive music was dead. It is alive and well kicking!
My rating: 9/10.

I expected more from Candyflip release. It is not boring but there is no excitement and outstanding track. Good production though.
Dislike track -- #7

I couldn't agree more, it takes a while to dig into to it, overall it is a nice album with good production and a nice one to have in your collection for you to listen home           "Great things are only possible with outrageous requests." Thea Alexander

It's been a while since I last reviewed something from candyflip, and a really long while since I wrote a review in english, and since my table is currently stacked with 7-8 cds to review it's getting difficult to keep up. This album came along with the mountain high chill out compil which I will also review shortly. Although I can't comment on the album cover since I didn't get one Judging from the one I saw on psyshop it looks kinda simple and not very attracting at all (plz can I make you some covers for your next releases;)), that's why I didn't really feel like this was something special, well...let's really see what it is

01. Path of Pathos (7:11)
Right from the start..bam! A fantastic groovy bassline comes in. Things are looking up here. And the percussion starts, it's a really nice slowly driving track. Although you could easily mistake this for some techno and house track some fantastic melodies come into focus. They are really crystal clear and give you that nice magical warm night time atmosphere. As the track slowly moves forward there is a cool retro alien movie kinda voice sample but I'm glad to say that the melodies just stay there and really give this track some depth. If trance artists decide to go in a house or techno direction then they definetly need to keep stuff like this in their tracks. Great track for the start.

02. Re-Order (8:26)
The second track also starts with some nice and soft melodies in the background. Suddenly a really deep and groovy kick and bassline come in. There are lots of cool short samples used here as well which clearly state that this guy wanted to make something more then just another progressive house album with only loops and patterns. This track is a bit more agressive then the last one but what is really great here is the amount of samples. Everything keeps changing and evolving and even though the basic structure of the track doesn't change much everything else just keeps it interesting. Halfway through there is a break and the track starts from scratch, this time with a really loud high hat which I kinda didn't like. It stays this way for a while and the track kinda looses its diversity for a while. But it's still very danceable and much more powerful then the first track.

03. The new U (7:29)
The track starts with a sample from one of Rowan Atkinson's live shows I think. It's kinda funny but badly mastered. Anywayz this track is a bit softer then the last one. With a kind of deep house atmosphere. Of course like before, short samples tend to break the monotony. Some cool percussion work comes in a bit later but overall this track is, again, just a tiny bit too boring. Of course this is after all, dancefloor material so it really doesn't have much effect when I listen to it at home. Near the middle of the track there is a break and the track starts with a really agressive rythm. So much for the deep house atmosphere . The sample from the beggining is played a couple of times again along with a short melody which kinda sounds wierd on top of all the agressive background. The track doesn't change much till the end but more samples are introduced to brake up the monotony so in the end, it's a solid track.

04. The Yippie Hippy Shake (6:21)
Well this one sure starts simple, like any techno track today. Then a cool female sample comes in saying: "that noise is driving me crazy" and a male one saying: "So what are you going to do about it" But this track is really simple since everything is really based on percussions and loops. What I really like about it are the small distortions that appear around the middle. They really start to push the track in an agressive direction but it's just too bad that they don't really get the attention needed. And this being one of the shorter tracks on the album it really stands out as the most boring one.

05. Synaesthesia (7:26)
Again we have a very loop based track with some nice short samples in the back. Some screchees and bleeps come in and give the track a bit more of a psychedelic atmosphere but the basic elements are kinda boring. After a while there are some distorted sounds again and this time they really sound great. After a break with some really wierd sounds finishes the beat starts again driving the track faster and faster till it just comes to a point where it's screaming with energy. Not bad but you wouldn't see me dance to it.

06. Delay Lama (7:34)
Funny name for a track The beat here is really deep and some really nice tribal sounds come in. The percussions are also very nice. It kinda reminds of Sub6 and their deep basslines. After a while there is a voice sample and a really funny melody comes in. This track really sounds different from the last 3. It's a lot deeper and just sounds more complete. Even though it doesn't change that much the beat is just so more alive. Listen to it on big speakers and you'll notice the difference. It doesn't change much till the end but it's a great track.

07. Animalism (7:00)
This one starts really different, with some really cool drumwork and a trippy voice sample. Some nice synth melodies are introduced and this track really stands out. Loads of trippy sounds, left to right fading and cool melodies. Well there is one sound that I didn't like and it's the voice sample that reminds me of that crappy eiffel 65 band But it's a great and very unusual track.

08. Red Bass (6:12)
As we get closer to the end the album gets better. This track also has a very nice beat and bassline and sounds really complete. The short synth melodies give it a nice intro and there are loads of cool percussions which really make the track sound dynamic. The beat is also very diverse, it keeps changing, has short breaks every once in a while and tons of sounds just come and go. Great Track!

09. True Love (7:10)
This one is again a bit wierd but the beat is also very dynamic and keeps changing. The bassline is very groovy and dark as well and some very nice tribal drums appear along with the percussions. It's amazing how some tracks here sound very simple while others like this one so diverse and interesting. Of course if I heard this one on the dancefloor I wouldn't dance since it's just a bit too wierd and doesn't have a constant beat you can dance to. Overall a nice funny track with lots of changes.

All in all it's a solid album, the style is very original since it combines the loops and groove of techno with the funny and twisted elements of psy trance but in a nice way without going to much to one side or the other. Some tracks are very boring and can only sound good on a big sound system while others are just made to listen at home. Indeed it takes a few good listens but it's still not really that special when compared to other progressive trance releases though the production quality is very good.
