There's a few people asleep in that photo, but is that a bad thing for a chillout DJ?
Last month I was playing at sunrise and I had a fair number of people asleep during my set. But then when the next DJ started his first tune, many of them woke up, had a stretch and wandered off. I took it as a compliment that I didn't disturb their rest.

DJ's who I know work extra hard to work out a great track selection along with exceptional mixing (beat, frequency and/or pitch) before they play a gig are many times being overlooked and treated the same as people who aren't doing anything up there but playing back some tunes. To me "showing off" means the DJ has taken the time to hone the craft of mixing either beat, or pitch, or both, is continuously building a solid collection of delectable tunes, knows their music well enough to mix on the fly and by doing so is EARNING their money at a paying gig. |

I judge my performances by the smiles on the faces of the people in the audience.
Nothing more.

Well in that case them you might remember me from Sonica. When you played your remix of ground luminosity, there was this guy that ran like a mad-man from under the tent when the irresistible, overpowering, mouth-watering and overwhelming chant started in the begging, who just fell on his knees and kneeled in admiration ... I had been waiting for the whole festival to hear just that track. IMHO the best chill track released this year.

When we DJ Psy chill- out at our radio show, the most important factor for us is the flow of the show and the track selection. We often play samples by Terence McKenna, Albert Hoffman and many other prominent Psy-culutre persons during tracks to give the show a special vibe...

Weaving together 4 hours of sonic tapestry with no concern for technique, and keeping a dancefloor moving for 4 hours with some kind of dynamic and having to beat-match seamlessly so as not to spoil 1000 people's drugs - or make them trip over - are two completely different propositions.
Theres no WAY I could do what Tristan or Dimitri or Leila can do. I could maybe learn but I don't share their passion for their craft and so will never excel at it like they do.
I don't really call myself a DJ. I'm just this scruffy dude who gets asked to play his favourite records in the room where they sell the tea. Suits me fine. If I were to start developing pretentions regarding my technique, I may avoid playing my favourite records and pick those that are easier to mix.
In my eyes, "the mix" is just a way of getting from one slice of beautiful music to the next - not an end in itself.
Which is fortunate cos what I usually do is wait until the first record finishes and hit "play" on the next one.

The other thread about mixing chillout has been bumped, and I just read this one on the back of that one. Aside from the way this thread veers off topic, I like the post from Ott above. Made me smile, and makes sense.

nice bump and extracting something awesome there djschofield. i can totally identify with that myself...
it wouldn't surprise me at all if ott himself likes seeking out underground little known chill mixes from us here on the forum and has spent a nice afternoon with tea journeying to some of our sonic offerings.

Being a small-time chillout 'dj' myself I really enjoyed reading this thread.
I like to explore multiple chillout genres in my sets and take the audience on a musical trip.
Indeed, the real key is track selection. This can make or break your set, together with the decor where you are playing. Nothing like a cozy little chillout with carpet/pillows and amazing (fluorescent) artwork hanging around
It's all about the love for the music, spreading posititve vibes and fun you get out of it!

Really enjoyable thread. Somehow I missed it when it first started in 2003, but perhaps I overlooked it as I was not yet DJing at that time. I've been playing chillout at parties since 2005, starting first on CDs (without any decks to practice on), then moving to Traktor and ultimately landing in Ableton Live, where I mostly play from nowadays.
With Live, a lot of prep has to be done before you can start your set - firstly the warping of tracks that you're planning on mixing (although I always have a nice selection of tracks unwarped in a set to throw in as the mood takes me), and if you're planning on beatmatching or harmonically mixing (which I tend to enjoy doing), most of the transitions are best planned out ahead of time, leaving less to the last-minute improvisation realm. When I play on CDs or Traktor, I improvise a lot more (obviously). Some gigs call to me more for one way or the other. Versatility is key.
That being said, I have built my DJ identity pretty squarely around harmonic mixing and beatmatching, and then have various samples, effects and loops at the ready to throw in as the mood suits me. I'm often asked to play an opening or closing set of a dance party, so the journey I plan has a clear path of energy rise or decrease, and usually I'm familiar with either the crowd, the venue, the environment or some combination of them, so I "channel" those elements when I'm compiling my set list in Live, usually packing about 3x as much music into it as I think I'll need. The actual mixes are meticulously planned out, and then I'm free to spend my energy during my set on playing the live accompaniments as mentioned above. It's definitely a different beast than going purely with the immediate flow of the dancefloor, but since people seem to like what I do, I'm sorted.
I have deep, mad respect for any chill DJ who has passion for what they do and puts a lot of intention into their sets, regardless of whether it's beatmatched or not. There is such a wide spectrum of expression within the downtempo realm that I think there's room for all of it, as long as it's authentic.
We just started throwing all-downtempo events here in Southern California, with a strong crew of DJs and producers who can play a wide range of styles and energy. SoCal hasn't really had a chillout scene of its own yet, and we're working on changing that. The response has been overwhelmingly positive from our attendees, and they've been exposed to everything from beatmatched midtempo to quirky avant garde chilltronica to lush, spacious beatless ambient, and all forms are equally appreciated. It's heartening to see and experience. Long live chill!
Relentlessly pursuing quality chillout. It can be a full time venture.
