oh, and Ott, your DJ set @ Trancendence`s during the night was a bless for all brazilian chill people!

As I said is really dumb arranging a chill set focused on tempo progression, but, if it happens in the middle of a set to think of two songs that you know could provide a nice blend, proper beatmatching surely can create a wicked spacecontinuum

Totally agree - and I have been known to do it on occasion - but when i DJ I use NI Traktor on a laptop - so beatmatching is really easy. One click on the "sync" button and you're there.

In fact, when I first started using Traktor, i found myself planning a set by tempo just so I could use the wonderful "sync" button. Trouble was, i found myself choosing the next tune based upon how well it mixes into the last one rather than how much I wanted to hear it.

And for me mate - i really enjoyed both sets. Thanks for saying so.

A tactic that I often notice on the dancefloor. At the Omni this year, I noticed that the chill sets that I most enjoyed were not the one's with the best technical mixing, and in fact techically some of the mixing could be described as awful, but chill sets are 99% about the tunes. I also heard some sets that I could not flaw the mixing, but it made for a fairly dull set....in fact they reminded of the what OTT said about the trance floor being a monotony at times, in that it felt like one pretty bland tune was playing for several hours non-stop.

But I didn't play at Omni this year - who's been ripping off my mixing style?

about critics from "other" DJs... or people.. comparing your work with others who're playing on the "dance floor"... and ofcourse nothing have to do with us. Just wanted to say that "our" scene its new and basically.. FREE. Trance scene is FULL on politics.. limits and this reflect the difficulty for the scene in "open" their minds.

mmm...
Justin, dont give so much importance in what the people say. means.. yes.. sometimes the critics are great for us.. so like this we can grow up.. and do our work @ best--- but to that comments that you know that you can't do much about it - bcz its not your business... just smile and say yah.. possible next time.
if your work... chosing the good tunes is right (deep in your heart)... people not need to be such "vanal" to come to tell or ask you why you dont do it as the guys possible the know. or howsoever...
if we still on the road and keeping in tune... i think we are doing a good job and ofcourse:: doing our best to get better and better.. bcz yes.. its all about passion-. indeed.

and yes.. as Dubfix say:: its not easy beat mixing::: the important thing is that you know the music you are playing and yes.. please your self and you will pleasde others.

love to you and yes.. on our mission

Lovely post sis!!!
What a surprise...didn't know you're a member here.
Well...basically the thing is that I actually beatmach when I think it's an improvement for the set.
But I've seen a few chill dj's that they twist the pitch so much to fit the track and beatmach that at the end sounds terrible.
I've seen a lot of answers written to me directly...that's very kind, thank you people.
But it was a question to all of you and the answers are for all of us.
Anyway...thanks.
Interesting thread huh???

My God...
I cant believe she wrote :
Nanda (chillosophy music)

From the past years that I have been able to be playing at ´´trance festivals`` and at the beach during the summer, I have said a few times that I dont consider myself a dj, yet, eventhough I got some experience throughout these years.....

And as for the signing my name on flyers, I have never used anything else other than my own artirstic name, which is an extention of my real name, branca - brainkiss ... just a joke with the sounding of that.. braiinnnnnnnnnnnnkiss... oh well... THEN......
JUST THEN, what ? 2,3,4 months ago.. a friend asked me what could he put after my name on a flyer... as he was worried about that ... I had no doubt... I just said: the philosofy of chill out or CHILLOSOPHY !!!!!
( or chilloutsophy )
The nice thing about the chillout ppl in this ´´general concepts`` is exactly that.. Im never even considering having a name after my own name... brainkiss( cause branca is only at trancendence that they put, i dont know why...hahaha) like:
BRAINKISS ( WHATEVER )!! UNLESS of course, its a super hiper ultra mega name... like ... hm... i dont know.. shpongle ? hahahaha
just kidding... anyway... BECAUSE... the philosophy is THAT.... THE CHILL PHILOSOPHY!!!!
no need for more...
I mean.. OTT for instance... I dont know ( should I ? oh god, hehehe ) what label he´s working at/to/for ? , but I know his name, OTT ! period. AND he´s got exactly that same spirit that was said in here.. of this philosophy of the chill out. period.

He cares about enjoying himself , his songs, making other ppl have a good time, and that´s IT.

which anyways, has to be the general idea of whoever wants to be playing at the chillout..

am I wrong or just tripping too bad ? did I express my self alright ???

I cant believe how this topic about ´´what if a dj of chillout that doenst mix is not as good as a mainfloor dj`` was going to end up in such a nice discussion, and with so many other topics in it !
I Loved it so far...to be here thinking about all these things said in here !!

Later !!!!

Well...she wrote Nanda (chillosophy music) because is the name of her label and her name.
Ott is part of Twisted...a thing that may be you didn't know coz you're not really a buyer, are you???
Ottie..I can see that you didn't waste your time in Brazil and the people knows you very well already, you british lover (is Zoe aware of this???)
However, you should be able to live with the idea that there is some people very into the Chill-out thing and for some others just WHATEVER it doesn't make the job.

Ok Mr. J Chaos !
I got it... whatever you thought I dont..
I knew OTT was Twisted already, now I know I just forgot it...
No, Im not ´´a`` buyer , cause im also not ´´a`` dj .
I´ve been doing this for fun and pleasure and thank´s to my musical preferences, I have the opportunity to be playing out at the best parties and trance festivals here in Brazil...
And no, I dont think of living out of it, cause I already have another profession - and yet, it allows me to have this HOBBY - which by the way, doesnt make it less worth to listen than any other...
Although OF COURSE I can live with the IDEA that OTHERS live out of it...I KNOW that..
IN FACT, I dont say Im a DJ cause I know this is a profession... and ppl DO LIVE OUT OF THEIR professions...

And YES, I know she signed that cause its HER name and label....I just liked the fact that Nanda signed THAT name, cause I myself though of something similar.
(chilloutsophy)
That´s it.

Is there some sort of gladiator type arena where we can give "DJs" real weapons and watch them slay it out? Seems it would be much more entertaining then watching them argue in forums, let alone, watch them play music.

No seriously, Justin, if you're going to rip people for not knowing/owning their stuff, what about this below?? C'mon man, the well informed moderator is supposed to nix this stuff.

I love this tune sooooo much!! A truly epic masterpiece from the vaults of the Posford brain.

According to my real copy of Mystical Experiences (btw - I own the original and re-release) Liner notes, Simon only engineered and co-wrote on tracks 1,2,3, and 4. Last time I checked Under the Overtones was track 10, who was written by Graham Wood and Raja Ram. Wow, isn't it amazing how it sounds like a prelude to Shpongle but WASN'T written by Simon? Gee, I wonder where he got some of his ideas? It's funny when people just automatically give Posford credit for good music, kinda like Jesus gets all the credit for the concept of love.

All in all, is it worth arguing about what a DJ is doing or not doing? I played a live gig this summer where I went on after Jeto of Kagdilla Records who had one entire mixed CD playing and was just standing their with his arms folded. I watched him for thirty minutes just letting music play from one deck without doing anything and he still gets booked for gigs which I find utterly mind blowing. Or maybe this is how he treats his chillout gigs. Eitherway It seemed that no one cared. On the other hand, I heard Saturnia mix with such technical precision, I'd swear she was playing a pre-mixed CD too, (but this was far from the case) yet no one really takes time to notice the difference unless you're a DJ yourself or you just like paying attention. It seems technical DJing is all about showing off to other DJ's and the few people who pay attention.

btw - Who in the hell is OTT and why is he getting 500 euros a pop to playback some music without mixing? He sounds like an iPod. haha, J/K.

Ok, back into the cellar for me.

Quasga, can you define 'showing off'? Surely showing off is a good thing..........Unless the person you are showing off to is only looking at your hands, and not listening to the what comes from the speaker.
Maybe its time we hid the DJ

I reckon a chillout could do worse than have OTT's iPod on shuffle. It also would save on the airfare......

How do you feel when somebody say`s to you that it`s not hard to play Chill-out because you don`t have to beatmix,or grade the B.P.M.(LIE!!!)and the only thing that you have to do is play 1 track after other track?????
Many "dance-floordj`s" told me this already, and this is really pissing me off.

Any comments about this blasphemy?????

what about the hip hop djs!!!
they could laugh looking our ""techno or trance djs" cause its not so hard to put
Two tracks at the same BPM
especialyy with the new technologies.......

anyway i think
the musics are different
so how can we try to compare the djs ' s work??

and to answer to the question
i play both, ambient and prog/transe
and it s two different things!not more easy one or the other!!just different!!!
music is life.........

It could also "only" be a source of self-satisfaction, no ? Doing it for the sane satisfaction of having improved, in example.

Hehehe well done, Quasga. And even more big respect to Graham for not having sank into the same style.. The music he makes as Blowfish is amazing.

Hmm I not a big fan of your way of seing things.. You justify the fact of not buying records because you say your're "not a deejay" and in the very next sentence you tell us lively that you use to spin mp3s in some big parties in your country.. And you even insist telling you have a regular job which would allow you to buy and support a very little bit the scene your are obvioulsy taking advantage of..

Sorry if it looks a little bit weird to me.

I meant no negative implication. It's just that DJ's who I know work extra hard to work out a great track selection along with exceptional mixing (beat, frequency and/or pitch) before they play a gig are many times being overlooked and treated the same as people who aren't doing anything up there but playing back some tunes. To me "showing off" means the DJ has taken the time to hone the craft of mixing either beat, or pitch, or both, is continuously building a solid collection of delectable tunes, knows their music well enough to mix on the fly and by doing so is EARNING their money at a paying gig. By this, they also earn their right to "show off" up there behind the decks. My point was (after writing an assload of filibuster) that a forum argument between Chill DJ's about what is exceptable or not in terms of Chillout DJing is trite. All in all, the promoter is responsible for making sure who they are booking is worthy.

Ok, that's my two cents. No more questions.
