Hey , i was just wondering what a psy artist would do live besides tweak a cutoff knob or move a modulation wheel , i remember watching liam howlett (the prodigy) and think what the fuck is he doing , any info on how you could genuinly peform psy live , by the way i use cubase sx3 and a couple of midi controllers.

I usually make a note of the root note and scale of the songs Im playing and improvise a little with a midi keyboard and my guitar.
If you arent confident enought or to high to do this you can allways have a synth with some predone fx presets and just do wosh fx, explosions or trigger samples from a sampler. |

IF you are too high or drunk you should not be on the stage in the first place IMHO.

The most obvious thing to me would be to be able to control the length of sections -- like each stage of a buildup, so that it's different every time. |

Loop of the Basses, kicks, percs/highs, and a main hook synth or two.
Everything els could in theory be done live. Aranging/sequencing all your loops could also be done live.
Right now I am running about 4-5 effects live on main outs for like breakdowns or what not and on Massive also that I use as a live synth while play'in.
I plan on setting up another live synth as well plus more crazy samples triggered and tweaked on the fly.
Tons of ways to settup a live set, this is just mine right now.
Laptops killed the original "live" set a guy surrounded by a wall of synths and sequencers and effect mods... Just tweakingknobs, pounding keys, and sweating his ass off. Not to say that a laptop producer caint sound as good or do as good of a live set but it takes more showmanship and fun little controllers, there is just something about have'in all that blinking gear aound that makes it fun to watch. \\\"Invoking the inner dancing buddha with future frequencies from beyond\\\" ~GyPsy

I think it depends on your vision....
I am planning a live set and i have no clue how it will be made, it probably will be made with a hardware synth(yamaha an1x) and Cds plus a laptop. Also i would love to have a good condenser mic for some live instruments(but im a little worried about acoustic feedback) like "gopichand(Ektar)" with dubdelay on, of course it would be cool with some percussion like tambourine but not a condenser for that, maybe a sure sm57 but i cant have both so i rather play the gopichand.. haha its psychedelic
I think its very important to jam with your tracks and find out what you are able to do with them, also Finding stable setups that you have tried and bench marked the gear...
Im checking the "mother of all livesets" thread for some ideas...
Peace

I'm doing my new tracks live from the start.
64 beat loops, all sounds over each other and mixed live using a midi controller.
It's dificult at first, but it's an amazing experience. It's easier to find out which sounds are important and what is there that doesn't make a real diference. I play with the structure in every take, inspired by the moment. When the track starts to take its final shape, I'm already very well trained in mixing it live and so there's no way that I forget how to build it, and so the track is instantly ready to be played live
I use the keyboard keys to mute/unmute kick, bass and drums, 8 knobs to mixes effects and 8 faders to mix synth lines... and it works like a charm! I'm not sure I'll ever do normal static track arrangements, already addicted to live creation!

ableton for live defo!!
cubase is more for production imo.
how live is live?
as live as you make it.
live for me is triggering/tweaking live synths/keyboards and dropping things in and out LIVE, get your own percussionist/bongo plauyer/guitarist or even vocalist in the mix aswell, thats always good and adds someting more realistic hahaha
most of my favourite live acts all use their tb303, tr909 and akai samplers live and they sound absolutely mint.
listen to sets by paul cortex, he's never made tunes, he just performs acid techno live with all his kit and that really is live.
i much prefer the live sound, especially of analog equipment, it sounds more human and more pleasing to the ear.
anything but a here's 1 i made earlier, press play and dance about live set, i hate the mofo's who do that, not naming names, they know who they are.
you wouldn't believe the amount of artists that claim to play live and they just put a cd on and act that they are doing live, they put the meaning into live ACTS - even some dj sets are more live then them acts hahahahahahah

So with you on that one. If you have a MIDI controller or any kind of keyboard and claim to be "live", you should then be pressing keys and actually be playing the piano from time to time, not just tweaking knobs.
To me, "Live" means your a musician, and your actually "being" a musician by playing something you've spent weeks learning the note patterns.
